Children in West and Central Africa have their rights violated on daily basis to an extreme extent. They die from malaria, diarrheal diseases and vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles.

How can you make a difference?

The Child Protection Specialist is responsible for managing and overseeing the development, implementation and monitoring of emergency preparedness and responses in the Country Offices in West and Central Africa region by providing technical support, quality oversight and leadership in key focus areas to support WCAR countries to plan and implement child protection responses in emergencies, with particular focus on strengthening the child protection capacities of UNICEF and partners, supporting the preparation of contingency and response plans.

Technical support for both emergency preparedness and response to all countries in the region, in line with UNICEF CCCs for child protection;

  • Emergency preparedness, contingency and response plans;
  • Strengthen CPiE systems in WCAR;
  • Knowledge management and capacity building;
  • Advocacy, networking and partnership building;

How can you make an impact?

To qualify as a Change Agent for every Child, you will have.

  • An Advanced University Degree, preferably in international development, human rights, psychology, sociology, international law or other social science field is required is required
  • A minimum of 8 years of professional experience in child protection and/other related areas at the international level with progressively greater management and advisory responsibilities in emergency programmes at national and international levels is required. Direct field experience in planning, managing, monitoring and evaluating child protection in emergencies (children and armed conflicts and natural disasters) programmes in a UN system agency or NGO is an asset. Experiences in coordinating protection clusters and monitoring of grave child rights violations are a distinct advantage.
  • Fluency in French and English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language or a local language is an asset.
