Current Hiring Practices and Trends in the Development Sector

Plan International is an independent development and humanitarian organisation that advances children’s rights and equality for girls.
We believe in the power and potential of every child. But this is often suppressed by poverty, violence, exclusion and discrimination. And it’s girls who are most affected.
Working together with children, young people, our supporters and partners, we strive for a just world, tackling the root causes of the challenges facing girls and all vulnerable children.
We support children’s rights from birth until they reach adulthood. And we enable children to prepare for – and respond to – crises and adversity. We drive changes in practice and policy at local, national and global levels using our reach, experience and knowledge.
We have been building powerful partnerships for children for over 80 years, and are now active in more than 70 countries.
We are looking for a talented individual to join our new and dynamic team to lead the media and communications strategy for Equal Measures 2030. This is a unique opportunity to bring your vision to building the profile and impact of this new cross-sector partnership, set up to ensure that governments deliver on the promises made to fulfil the rights of girls and women in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a focus on data and evidence. Working closely with EM2030’s founding partners, you will develop and lead the implementation of a global, multi-platform external communications plan focused on data, gender equality and the Sustainable Development Goals.
You will bring a network of global media contacts, be an excellent writer and communicator, and have a thorough understanding of international development and multilateral processes, as well as an innovative and collaborative outlook and passion for gender equality issues. You will see opportunity in using the power of evidence and data to improve the lives of girls and women. You believe in the power of both grassroots girls’ and women’s movements and of influencing at the global and regional level. You will also believe in the power of working across sectors, including joint working between civil society and the private sector.
Your proven ability to translate complex issues into powerful narratives and communication products will be combined with your skills in diplomacy and balancing the interests of a diverse set of partners. You will excel at planning, production and problem solving and developing good relationships with the media and external stakeholders, as you’ll be the key liaison for press. You have big picture vision combined with a willingness to pitch in with the day to day work. Experience working with an international organisation or NGO is a distinct advantage.
