The consultant will support the delivery and coordination of UNEP’s AMR-related activities in the region, with focus on the ASEAN region in its initial phase. Activities will be implemented in close collaboration with the Quadripartite partners and will contribute technically to advancing UNEP’s efforts on strengthening the environmental dimensions of AMR in the region. The expected outputs will help enhance UNEP’s capacity for engagement in the AMR arena in the region to develop and implement long-term strategic approaches that fully recognize and integrate environmental dimensions of AMR, and the synergies needed to institutionalize and operationalize a One Health response, including upstream preventative actions.

Responsibilities

  • UNEP, as the leading global environmental authority, is working to provide science-based evidence that can inform strategies on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and ensure that the environmental dimensions are adequately reflected in the global response to AMR.
  • Technical environment sector-specific activities are carried out to address the environmental dimensions of AMR.
  • In addition, UNEP is part of the Quadripartite partnership, together with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), as the leading intergovernmental organizations on human, animal, plant and environment health.
  • The Quadripartite developed the Strategic Framework of Collaboration for AMR, which reflects the joint work of the four organizations to advance a One Health response to AMR.
  • The Quadripartite Joint Secretariat on AMR (QJS) coordinates and consolidates this joint work.
  • In 2024, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a political declaration on AMR, which recognizes the work carried out by the Quadripartite and entrusts new mandates to coordinate the global response to AMR. Moreover, the 4th Ministerial Conference on AMR, held in November 2024 in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, reinforced this recognition and mandates to promote urgent action.   UNEP Asia and the Pacific Office is strengthening its capacity to fulfil the AMR mandates and further engage with the Quadripartite partners in Asia and the Pacific region.
  • UNEP Asia and the Pacific Office is seeking a specialist to contribute substantively to the delivery of UNEP’s activities on AMR in Asia and the Pacific region, with focus on the ASEAN region in its initial phase to further enhance UNEP’s work on the environmental dimensions of AMR and foster the engagement with the Quadripartite partners and other relevant regional stakeholders in the region.

Requirements:

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in the fields of human, animal or public health, life sciences or the environmental management sector is required.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in environmental or public health policy, chemical safety, antimicrobial resistance or related area.
  • Experience related to antimicrobial resistance environmental aspects at the international level and in the region. is an asset.
  • Experience in Asia and the Pacific Region, and Regional and Sub-regional bodies is desirable.
  • Working experience in a multicultural environment including United Nations desirable.  
  • Working experience in a multicultural environment including United Nations desirable. 
  •  Working experience in a multicultural environment including United Nations desirable.
  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For the position advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
