This position is located in the Media Outreach and Spokesperson’s Office, in the Executive and Management Division of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Geneva. The incumbent, reports to the chief of the Media Outreach and Spokesperson’s Office.

Responsibilities:

  • Proposes, produces, shoots and edits multimedia, high-impact content --including short, dynamic videos and storytelling products that are optimized for each social media platform and diverse audiences. 
  • Analyzes the dynamics of each social media channel, their audiences, and implications for multimedia creative requirements; leverages where possible latest trends, news, memes, formats, sounds. 
  • Provides guidance on social news content and creative execution for related multimedia deliverables; ensures consistent editorial delivery and establishes a clear consultative process working with teams internally and through each phase of the production process.  
  • Exercises journalistic and political judgement to make timely editorial decisions on what should go on OHCHR's social media platforms in different languages.
  • Drafts complex material for UN social media platforms. 
  • Plans and initiates strategic and proactive outreach activities through social media campaigns and collaboration with the UN-wide social media presence.
  • Actively identifies and maintains relations and partnerships with key stakeholders that contribute to the development and implementation of OHCHR's initiatives in the field of social media. 
  • Increases OHCHR's presence on social media platforms and strengthen OHCHR's brand awareness among target audiences.
  • Promotes in-house social media usage, event promotion and engagement. 
  •  Evaluates results and impact of communications activities on social media platforms; reports on developments, trends and attitudes regarding the UN. 
  • Monitors and evaluates interactions and feedback through OHCHR's social media presence, responds on behalf of the Office when deemed appropriate in liaison with relevant divisions and branches within OHCHR. 
  • Contributes to OHCHR communications campaigns, especially for Human Rights Day, through social media initiatives and incorporating social media elements in OHCHR's communications activities.
  •  Represents OHCHR in the UN social media communicators' group and liaises with social media focal points in the UN system and beyond. 
  • Provides advice to managers and senior officers on the strategic use of social media to strengthen OHCHR's human rights leadership and advocacy role.
  • Monitors and analyses current events, public opinion and press, identifies issues and trends, and advises management on appropriate action/responses. 

Education:

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communications, journalism, international relations, political science, public administration or related field.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience:

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in communications, public information, journalism, public relations, or related area is required.   
  • Experience managing various social media platforms is required.   
  • Experience in human rights at the international level, preferably in the United Nations system or similar International Organization, is desirable. 
  •   Experience disseminating news on social media is desirable.   
  • Experience in producing multimedia content for digital platforms, such as Adobe CC (Adobe Premiere Pro, XD, Photoshop, AfterEffects), and non-Adobe software like Sketch is desirable.   
  • Experience in monitoring, measuring and analyzing results on social media is desirable.

Languages:

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For the position advertised, Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required.
  • Knowledge of French is desirable.
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
