Gary McMahon, PhD in economics from the University of Western Ontario, is an independent consultant working primarily on issues related to the development of the mining sector in a manner that all stakeholder groups benefit, political economy of development, the relationships between socio-economic and environmental sustainability, and the micro and macro aspects of natural resource development. From 2009-15 he worked as a senior mining specialist for the World Bank. From 2006-09 he worked as a consultant on the issues listed above. From 2001-06 he was principal economist with the Global Development Network. He was on secondment to the World Bank from 2004-2006, where he also worked from 1996 to 2001, primarily on issues related to social and environmental sustainability and research capacity building in developing countries. He previously worked at the International Development Research Centre in Canada and Laurentian University in Sudbury, Canada. He has published on a variety of topics in development economics and has edited 10 books on development and transition economies.
