Intersections – Peace, Gender and Climate

The Austrian Development Agency (ADA) is now inviting development organisations as well as other equivalent institutions Cooperation to submit project proposals addressing the intersections of conflict prevention and peacebuilding, gender equality, and environment and climate action.

This Call for Proposals aims at advancing synergies while eliminating barriers between thematic silos and frameworks for peacebuilding, accelerate gender equality and drive climate action.

Impact and Objectives

  • ADA recognizes the interrelated negative impacts of climate change, conflict and gender inequality. Therefore, this CfP aims at advancing synergies while eliminating barriers between thematic silos and frameworks to promote peace, accelerate gender equality and drive climate action.
  • Selected SDGs and targets are provided to give an indication of where links can be made:
  • Goal 16: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels
  • Significantly reduce all forms of violence and related death rates everywhere
  • Ensure responsive, inclusive, participatory and representative decision making at all levels
  • Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
  • Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation
  • Ensure women´s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life
  • Ensure access to water and sanitation for all
  • Implement integrated water resource management at all levels, including through transboundary cooperation as appropriate
  • Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
  • Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries
  • Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning

Funding Information

  • The maximum total amount available for funding is EUR 4.500.000,00.
  • The amount of the contribution requested from ADA must be within the following range (in EUR): 500,000 – 1,500,000.

Duration: Project proposals may be submitted for a duration of maximum 48 months.

Apart from aligning to the Regional Strategy’s thematic priorities, examples for guiding questions on how to address the intersections could be the following:

  • How to develop the capacities of institutions and civil society organisations in Conflict prevention and peacebuilding for effective response to the drivers and Impacts of climate change and to address gender inequalities;
  • How to promote gender equality through effective and inclusive conflict prevention and peacebuilding, while considering climate change adaptation and/or mitigation in fragile contexts;
  • What are the drivers for conflict-sensitive and gender-transformative climate change adaptation and/or mitigation related to transboundary integrated water resource management?

Criteria

  • Target groups are local organisations and institutions, civil society and community-based organisations, associations, unions, cooperatives, etc. in Eastern Africa.
  • Direct beneficiaries are people affected by regional conflicts and/or transboundary water resources management challenges, with a special focus on women and girls and vulnerable groups who are particularly at risk of conflict impacts and exposed to climate change and environmental changes, including minorities, internally displaced people, youth, people with disabilities, the elderly etc.
  • The proposed projects should relate to regional conflict prevention and promotion of peace and/or transboundary water resources management in the target region, therefore encompassing activities in at least two neighbouring countries of the region.
