Detailed Description

Purpose/Specific Objective of the Activity
There are three main objectives for this contract:

  • To determine the prevalence of good as well as poor-quality AMLs in Tier I areas in the GMS countries with focus on artemisinin-based therapies
  • To understand the sources (country of manufacture and manufacturers)
  • To identify key pocket areas of problems with poor-quality AMLs requiring more investments and intervention

The expected outcome is:

  • Study report with a specific set of pragmatic recommendations for effective interventions and investments from policy and regulation perspective for better support to the containment of malaria resistance efforts.                                   

Scope to the activity

  • WHO wants to test antimalarial medicines  from selected sampling sites located in districts from border provinces in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam.
  • The products to be analysed are the following antimalarials: Artemether-lumefantrine, Artesunate-Mefloquine, Dihydroartemisinin-Piperaquine, Quinine, Artesunate, Primaquine
  • The contractor has to work with  Quality Control laboratories that has either ISO 17025 accreditation or WHO Prequalification status and is authorized by its National Regulatory Authorities.

Description of activities to be carried out

  • Set up five (5) investigation teams, one per each country, led by a knowledgeable investigator, and supervised by a senior manager or delegate. 
  • Once investigation teams are established, organize an investigators meeting with representatives from the National Regulatory Authorities of the 5 countries.
  • Sampling: Randomised sampling method will be preferred for sampling location as well as for medicines samples.
  • Testing: compendial methods and procedures and/or validated analytical methods. (Please refer to point 5. Methodology)
  • Data analysis; excel spreadsheet and/or any appropriate statistical software program
