Transcultura Call for Young Caribbean Film Producers

The programme Transcultura: Integrating Cuba, the Caribbean and the European Union through Culture and Creativity, implemented by UNESCO and funded by the European Union, has launched a call for applications to sponsor the participation of five Caribbeans entry-level or mid-career film producers and producing filmmakers in the 2023 European Film Market (EFM) Toolbox Programmes, within the context of the next edition of the Berlin International Film Festival which will take place in Berlin, Germany, from 16 to 26 February 2023.

The Toolbox Programmes are initiatives organised by the EFM’s Diversity & Inclusion team. Aimed at entry-to-mid level feature-length film producers or producing filmmakers from the documentary or the fiction sector respectively, the Toolbox Programmes are designed specifically to endow documentary and fiction creatives from underrepresented groups with business tools and connections. Comprising access to networking and matchmaking events and additional business modules, the programmes provide a kit of transferable business know-how and connections under the guidance of a consultant and coordinators.

This UNESCO Transcultura call is aimed at young film producers and producing filmakers aged between 18 and 35, who are nationals and permanent residents of Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cuba, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago. The UNESCO Transcultura programme will fully cover the cost of participation of five young Caribbean film professionals, including the Market Badge (access pass) to participate in the European Film Market, the participation fee for the Toolbox Programme, and all international mobility and accommodation costs to/in Berlin during the EFM.

Phases

The Toolbox Programmes include:

  • In the preparatory phase: online meeting between consultants and participants with feedback on projects and strategic planning for networking at the EFM, as well as organizational and logistical advice on the EFM from the coordinators.
  • Three weeks before the EFM (25.01-08.02.2023): an immersive 2-week programme of focused workshops with experienced tutors on the following topics: Pitching tools, Funding, and incubators, Grant writing, Impact marketing, Sales and distribution, Press & PR, Co-Production.
  • During the EFM (16-22.02.2023): participation in matchmaking, networking, and community building events in Berlin.

What will cover this Call?

Through this initiative, Transcultura will cover all expenses for the participation in the EFM Toolbox Programmes, and the international mobility and accommodation to/in Berlin, Germany, from 16 to 22 February 2023, including:

  • Participation in the EFM
  • Accreditation to participate in the European Film Market
  • Participation in the chosen Toolbox Programme
  • Pre-departure training on pitching, market preparedness, and how to navigate the EFM
  • Assistance in curating meetings with broadcasters, distributors, and festivals.
  • International mobility to Berlin:
  • Round-trip flights in economy class,
  • Accommodation in a 3-star hotel, or similar,
  • Transfers in/out,
  • PCR tests and visa costs, if needed,
  • 3 meals per day and daily transportation, if needed,

Eligibility Criteria

You are eligible if you:

  • are an entry-level to mid-career film producer or producing filmmaker aged between 18 and 35,
  • are national and permanent resident of any of the 17 Member States of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Caribbean Forum (CARIFORUM) and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS): Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cuba, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Monserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago,
  • have a documentary or a fiction feature film project either in development or ready for market exposure,
  • are available to participate in online workshops between 25 January and 8 February 2023, and travel to Berlin from 16 to 22 February 2023.
