Job Description

Save the Children is currently recruiting for an Activity Director for a five-year USAID/Food for Peace (FFP)-funded opportunity. The Implementer-led Design, Evidence, Analysis, and Learning (IDEAL) program, currently in its second year of implementation, intends to improve the food security and nutrition of vulnerable populations by improving the design, implementation, and overall effectiveness of development and emergency food security activities. This quality improvement effort will build on the success of the TOPS Program (Technical and Operational Performance Support), and address the knowledge and capacity gaps in the food security and nutrition implementing community. It will support the application of evidence and learning in knowledge sharing and peer learning efforts, capacity strengthening, and stakeholder consultation. It includes a grants component to support new knowledge and innovation, and a specialized focus on the generation and use of evidence and learning.

IDEAL is envisioned to be a catalyst and facilitator for the community of practice of food security and nutrition stakeholders engaged in reflection, learning and knowledge application to improve quality and effectiveness of activity implementation.

What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)

The Activity Director will provide vision, direction, strategic leadership and management to the overall IDEAL Leader Award. The director will also provide continued focus on fostering the long-term sustainability of the community of practice funded under this Award.

Consortium Management and Leadership (60%)

Plays the key role in creating and sustaining relationships with Food for Peace in order to facilitate communication about donor satisfaction, and program direction and compliance.
Ensures overall program success and that activities are effectively contributing to the overall goal of the program; the program should be working within a clear and consistent theory of change.
Communicates directly and transparently with IDEAL consortium partners and key stakeholders, communicating program objectives, including negotiating scopes of work, addressing requisite revisions in the work plan, and troubleshooting issues that may arise.
Exercises independent judgment and discretion on significant matters.
Contributes to the Department of Hunger and Livelihoods strategy development, as a member of the Senior Management Team.

Human Resources and Team Management (25%)

  • Promotes a non-discriminatory and productive work environment; promotes gender equity within program activities.
  • Promotes staff capacity building; working with senior managers, identifying gaps and implement solutions, providing management support to staff as needed.
  • Supervises key personnel and other staff, including assuring updated job descriptions and objectives, conducting annual performance evaluations.
  • Ensures timely recruitment, orientation, and training of new staff as needed. Monitors program needs and adjust staffing as appropriate.
  • Promotes positive work environment and respect among team members. Promotes recognition of successes and address challenges in a timely manner.

Financial Management and Compliance (15%)

  • Ensures the team implements quality programming in a cost-effective manner.
  • Oversees the timely expenditure of the approved budgets in line with the work plan.
  • Ensures that financial practices support Save the Children’s accountability to the donor and that financial reports are timely and complete.
  • Ensures development and submission of donor required reports, including, but not limited to, work plans, quarterly reports, annual results reports, pipeline analyses, and financial forecasts and reports.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 10-15 years’ of experience managing large-scale international development and/or emergency activities, and providing leadership to diverse teams of highly experienced professionals.
  • Master’s degree or equivalent relevant experience required.
  • Demonstrated experience in food security, organizational capacity development and partnership development with U.S. Government agencies, host country governments, implementing partner organizations and other stakeholders.
  • Experience in managing multi-partner consortium projects.
  • Strong level of technical and/ or managerial knowledge, skills, and experience to lead a multi-disciplinary team, or provide the technical advice, guidance and direction related to various size programs and grants.
  • Ability to network and communicate with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Availability to travel internationally up to 20%, including to higher risk or resource poor environments.
