Job Description

Chemonics seeks an Africa new business director for its U.K. Division. The Africa new business director will lead tasks related to new business, technical advisory support, and management and leadership of development initiatives in the East Africa and or West Africa regions. Primary functions of the role include leading business and strategy development and contributing to corporate strategies, technical practices, and staff development and supervision. The new business director will focus on U.K.-based international development funding agencies, including the Department for International Development (DFID) and the Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO). We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate with division leadership and other regional new business directors and teams
  • Lead the staffing and resourcing of anticipated and live proposal teams,
  • Ensure quality control throughout the proposal preparation process
  • Develop effective working relationships with U.K.-based international development funding agencies, counterparts, and stakeholders
  • Cultivate partnerships with international firms or organizations as well as local, in-country partners
  • Plan and direct home-office business development strategy for U.K.-based international development funding agencies
  • Analyze funding trends and priorities of U.K. donors and clients, formulating strategies, new directions, and techniques to develop the company and improve market share
  • Develop guidelines for increasing business with U.K.-based funding agencies
  • Promote outstanding client service with home-office staff and field teams
  • Proactively track coming solicitations; inform relevant in-house parties of bidding opportunities
  • Participate in corporate new business task forces, contributing especially to technical approach strategy and proposal team management
  • Serve as a salary negotiator and lead negotiation teams for candidates proposed on bids
  • Apply technical expertise to new business
  • Conceptualize and lead or supervise proposal and other relevant technical assignments for projects funded by U.K.-based agencies
  • Lead proposal development, analyze and recommend proposal-related courses of action, and conceptualize teaming, technical approaches, and cost strategies to maximize Chemonics’ competitive advantage
  • Provide vision and leadership to proposal teams, supervising the application of best practices
  • Periodically travel to explore new business opportunities, represent Chemonics, or gather information to write a technical proposal
  • Interact with key client and counterpart staff to strategically influence new programming decisions; develop and negotiate strategic partnerships with local firms
  • Demonstrate technical competence in work products, review and comment on project technical work, and provide technical input to reports and other documents
  • Maintain and expand professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies and Chemonics’ practice networks
  • Speak and write knowledgeably on the economic, political, social, and cultural environment of assigned development assistance projects
  • Delegate, supervise, mentor, and evaluate assigned staff, communicating clear performance goals and standards, offering regular performance feedback, promptly resolving problems, and creating time and opportunity for staff to develop in key competency areas
  • Promote staff development through coaching, mentoring, and facilitating professional growth opportunities
  • Foster a workplace culture of promoting inclusivity, creating opportunity, serving others, building trust, innovating, and exceeding expectations while modelling these best practices
  • Define team roles and responsibilities clearly and concisely, learn and promote strategies for effective teamwork and leadership development, and cultivate collaborative working relationships across the company
  • Serve as acting managing director or senior vice president as necessary


  • Degree in relevant field or equivalent relevant experience required; advanced degree preferred
  • Thorough understanding of UK donor client requirements and preferred methods of business
  • Understanding of and fluency in financial and project management systems and procedures
  • Ability to conceptualize, outline, perform, and direct the research and writing of technical documents (e.g., reports, proposals, and professional articles)
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing, lead effective meetings, and effectually deliver presentations
  • Ability to solve complex technical, managerial, or operational problems and evaluate options based on relevant information, resources, well-rounded experience, and knowledge
  • Ability to operate in positions of advanced authority and oversee significant activities and budgets
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and supervise assigned department staff, several project teams, and new business efforts
  • Willingness to travel and work abroad for extended periods, including in fragile and conflict environments; experience living or working in developing countries preferred
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated management, organizational, and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity


  • Foreign language proficiency in a region in which we operate preferred
