The Finance Division of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking an Analyst to provide support to the Financial Planning and Analysis (“FP&A”) team. The Finance Division is led by the Chief Financial Officer and is responsible for providing fiscal management, implementing financial strategy, and maintaining the fiscal integrity of HRW. The FP&A Analyst supports forecasting, financial planning, and internal reporting so that client teams can make informed and accurate decisions within our Beyond Budgeting framework. The FP&A Analyst reports to the FP&A Manager, based in New York, and may be based in HRW’s New York, Washington D.C., London, Brussels, or Amsterdam office.


  • Maintain and update specialized financials for HRW divisions and special initiatives, such as rolling forecasts and KPIs, as well as entity-specific and organization-wide financial reports;
  • Liaise between the FP&A team and key internal financial stakeholders, simply communicating complex financial information to HRW divisions and about special initiatives.
  • Gather expense data from accounting database to generate and format monthly expense reports for program directors, as well as input report data into expense reporting spreadsheets, and maintain spreadsheets over fiscal year;
  • Utilize internal database, planning and reporting systems (Netsuite, PBCS, Salesforce) to update various expense and revenue status reports monthly, and provide data to support Finance directors’ financial analyses;
  • Perform database maintenance as needed (journal entries and other accounting adjustments);
  • Periodically reconcile personnel data from the HR database with personnel data maintained by Finance;
  • Update and maintain list of 800+ projects within the financial databases;
  • Provide support for the financial planning and analysis team as needed;
  • Perform additional tasks as required by the Manager and Associate Director of FP&A.
  • Contribute to presentations for senior executives and the Board of Directors; and
  • Perform other tasks as may be required.


Education: A bachelor’s degree in finance, business administration or a related field is required.

Experience: A minimum of two years of related experience is required. Prior experience working in nonprofit/NGO finance is highly desirable.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

  • Previous experience in and/or demonstrated knowledge of nonprofit finance and fund accounting is required.
  • Strong computer knowledge, including advanced ability with Microsoft Excel and a highly-developed understanding of spreadsheet and database systems is required.
  • Excellent time-management skills and ability to prioritize tasks while maintaining a strong attention to detail are required.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to take initiative, prioritize with minimal supervision, and work independently as well as function as a member of a team are required.
  • Excellent communication, creative problem-solving, and strong organization skills are required.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills in English are required.
  • Ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously is necessary.
  • Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.
  • Experience with NetSuite financial accounting system and PBCS is preferred, but not required.
  • Strong interest in human rights is desirable.

Salary and Benefits: The salary range for this position, if it is based in the United States, begins at $51,232. Our salary bands vary by location; if the position were to be based outside of the US, the salary would not be a direct conversion of the US salary but would rather be situated within the relevant local salary band based on the experience of the successful candidate.
