Alive & Thrive (2008-2022) is an initiative to save lives, prevent illness, and ensure healthy growth and development. Good nutrition in the first 1,000 days, from conception to two years of age, is critical to enable all children to lead healthier and more productive lives. Alive & Thrive is scaling up improved infant and young child feeding and maternal nutrition through multi-sectoral programs in several countries in Asia and Africa and through strategic technical support and the dissemination of innovations, tools, and lessons worldwide. Alive & Thrive is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, governments of Canada, Ireland, and Madagascar, UNICEF, and the Tanoto Foundation. A&T’s annual budget is approximately $22 million.

Job Summary / Responsibilities:

The Associate Director, Finance oversees, manages, administers and directs financial and accounting functions. He/she is primarily responsible for the Alive & Thrive project financial/accounting operations, including financial monitoring and reporting, analysis of financial data, donor financial reporting, budget preparation, monitoring and analysis and communicating project financial performance and audit results to management. The Associate Director, Finance provides leadership and technical guidance on all accounting and financial matters, identifies areas needing improvement to ensure efficient operations of the function and provides necessary staff development and training. He/she is responsible for approving procurement and contractual packages and financial transactions to ensure compliance with the contractual and financial requirements of the funders, organizational policies and generally accepted accounting principles. The Associate Director, Finance represents the project in the annual external and internal audits.

Financial Management

  • Leads program finance/accounting function to achieve project and organizational strategic and operational goals.
  • Prepares, reviews and approves donor financial reports for submission in an accurate and timely manner. Respond to questions and clarifications from the donors.
  • Prepares and manages monthly pipeline reports.
  • Provides oversight with strategic direction and process improvement plans for financial reporting, budgetary planning and procedures, audit reviews and financial controls.
  • Develops and implements effective and efficient business processes and procedures to deal with a wide range of financial issues.
  • Provides financial accountability and quality control; establishes, applies and enforces organizational standard systems and processes.
  • Reviews and approves financial transactions in line with approved budgets and in compliance with organizational policies and procedure, and donor requirements.
  • Approves procurement and contractual packages to ensure financial and budgetary compliance.
  • Selects, develops and evaluates personnel to ensure efficient operation of the program.
  • Provides recommendations to, and consults with, project management on the financial performance of the project.
  • Prepares, monitors and updates project budgets.
  • Manages project responses to the financial sections of the internal and external audits.

Field Office Finances

  • Oversees status of project funds for the field offices.
  • Reviews and approves monthly financial reporting of field offices including monthly reconciliations, cash flow analysis, inventories, payroll, and all other financial activities.
  • Develops and manages internal financial reviews with field offices and implements corrective action plans.
  • Provides guidance to both home office-based Program Officers and field-based finance staff through updates and clarifications on policy and procedure manuals as needed.
  • Develops, implements and trains staff on financial systems and procedures. Creates trainings as needed to address gaps in knowledge of policies and/or updated policies and procedures.

Subcontractor Financial Administration

  • Oversees financial monitoring of applicable subcontracts and partner agreements, including the review of vouchers for accuracy and compliance with client's billing requirements.
  • Reviews cost proposals submitted by the agencies and organizations for budgetary accuracy.
  • Screens subcontractor annual audit reports and informs senior management of the results.
  • Maintains accurate and updated filing system for all partner and sub-agreements.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures with accounting, financial operations and management, and financial information systems.

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) practices and reporting guidelines.
  • Ability to present financial information to a non-financial audience.
  • Ability to execute detail-oriented work rapidly and with a high level of accuracy.
  • High degree of proficiency in written and spoken English communication, including presentation and training skills.
  • Ability to manage tight deadlines and deliver high volumes of work with minimal supervision.
  • Well-developed computer spreadsheet skills.
  • Working knowledge of relevant accounting software packages Prior experience with Quick Books strongly preferred.

Supervision Given/Received:

  • Manages staff to meet program and organizational strategic goals.
  • Sets goals, develop and implement procedures, and trains staff to achieve results. Effectively manages under performing employees within guidelines set by on organizational policies and procedures.
  • Education:
  • Master’s Degree or its International Equivalent preferred. Bachelor's Degree or its International Equivalent required.


  • Prefers at least 10 years of financial management experience. Minimum of 8+ years of finance management experience.
  • Experience in financial and contractual regulations and understanding of international donor regulations and procedures. Familiarity with Bill & Melinda Gates Funded programs a plus.
  • Must have experience with accounting and financial reporting for not-for-profit organizations working overseas.
  • Must be able to prepare account reconciliations and other standard accounting reports.
  • Knowledge of and ability to develop and maintain filing and record management systems.
  • Experience training staff, including field-based staff.
  • Knowledge of and ability to understand and navigate through an electronic accounting package.
  • Overseas and/or program experience desirable.
  • Past experiences managing and leading a finance department is required.
  • Articulate, professional and able to communicate in a clear, positive manner with clients and staff.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English. Knowledge of French is a plus.
  • Prior work in a non-governmental organization (NGO).
  • Experience working with an international organization.
