Project Overview and Role

Market Development Facility is an Australian Government funded multi-country initiative which promotes sustainable economic development, through higher incomes for women and men, in our partner countries. We connect individuals, businesses, governments and NGOs with each other, and with markets at home and abroad. This enhances investment and coordination and allows partnerships to flourish, strengthening inclusive economic growth. MDF commenced operations in Fiji in 2011, expanded to Timor-Leste in 2012, to Pakistan in 2013, and to Papua New Guinea and Sri Lanka in 2015.

MDF is funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT). It is implemented by Palladium in partnership with Swisscontact.

In Fiji, MDF works in the areas of Tourism, High Value Agriculture, and Urban Industries. MDF's focus in high value agriculture is on improving the competitiveness of Fijian companies, and their products, as they seek to increase the volume and value of Fijian agriculture exports.

In 2019, MDF partnered with Three Hundred Islands (hereafter referred to as the "Partner") to introduce a premium ginger beverage into retail outlets in the Australian market. The Partner is now looking to strategically expand the sales and marketing of its premium ginger beverage into selected Australian markets. To facilitate this, MDF and the Partner are seeking to engage a professional and credible Beverage Consultant to assess the export potential of the premium ginger beverage so as to guide the Partner on how to enter and position its product in the appropriate market segment in Australia. This is a short-term assignment for 30 non-consecutive working days over a span of 3 months and is expected to commence in February 2020.


  • The Beverage Consultant will undertake all activities necessary to fulfill the objective and key deliverables of the assignment, including but not limited to the following:
  • Undertake market research to determine the appropriate market sub-segment in the Australian nutraceutical and/or the healthy beverage market for the Partner's premium ginger beverage;
  • Conduct one-to-one scoping meetings with key industry players and potential distributors;
  • Identify current market supply-demand trends and define potential gaps in the market that the product could take advantage of;
  • Provide country-specific requirements for the export of health beverages from Fiji to Australia;
  • Using the market research, identify and analyse consumers responsiveness, preferences and willingness to purchase ginger beverages, with particular focus on the Partner's ginger beverage;
  • Design the marketing and sales strategy for the premium ginger elixir product into the selected Australian market segment; and
  • Develop appropriate export pathways, including Australian distribution channels and partners, to reach the target market and grow sales.

  • A graduate degree in international business, economics or related field. A well-recognised qualification in marketing will be an added advantage.
  • Excellent report writing skills and verbal communication skills with the ability to exchange information and interpret data, with the Partner and key industry players professionally and efficiently.
  • A thorough understanding and knowledge of the natural health beverage industry and distribution channels/models in the Australian market.
  • Strong international experience in agricultural export, marketing and/or trade development.
  • Experience Minimum of 5 years' experience in sales and marketing and/or worked in senior roles in an organisation.
  • Strong attention to detail and a strong analytical mind.
  • Previous experience in undertaking market studies related to the introduction of new products in the market is compulsory.
