Job Description

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is the world's largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide. We are seeking to fill a Short-Term Professional position of Business Engagement Manager for Programme based at our Headquarters in Rome, Italy.

Technology and connectivity are rapidly reaching the most vulnerable people and places affected by crisis, but they are also increasingly expanding to the services responding to those same crises. As one of the main humanitarian actors, WFP has the opportunity and the obligation to leverage data and technology to better know and serve those in need by digitally transforming the way it works. Such ambition led to a plan aimed at establishing, integrating, and mainstreaming the core elements of an end-to-end digital business process.

The Business Engagement Manager (BEM) will be responsible for the development and implementation of digital roadmaps for the Programme portfolio. The BEM will need to have deep business knowledge of the WFP Programme portfolio, extensive field experience, be able to think analytically and strategically lead the relationship with Programme, while shaping the technology demand for the portfolio. As part of the Digital Transformation Service team, the BEM role works closely with the business to provide both strategic and tactical guidance on their technology health and roadmap, with the aim of increasing WFP’s maturity in how it manages technology. The BEM will be a natural communicator who can build relationships and learn quickly how to prioritize needs across a wide range of audiences.

Under the general supervision of the Chief of Digital Transformation Services the incumbent will be responsible for the following functions:

  • Lead engagement between all divisions within Programme;
  • Develop a deep understanding of their evolving business model, regardless of technology, compiling and or updating the relevant Business Roadmap;
  • Understand new technology trends, forecast future requirements and guide business strategies to include a digital dimension;
  • Manage the overview of the technologies these teams are using, and how effective/fit for purpose it is, using the portfolio health check template;
  • Strategically facilitate legitimate demand and prioritize scheduling through the outputs of the Business-Technology Roadmap and the Portfolio Healthcheck;
  • For development taking place outside of the Technology Division, guide the business in the process to self-register solutions and communicate the Freedom in a Framework requirement for new solutions;
  • Thoroughly understand existing solutions in WFP and articulate their value to these business areas;
  • Understand and communicate new products, features and capabilities;
  • Liaise with other Business Engagement Managers in Regional Bureaus and in Headquarters to ensure an integrated, coherent approach to the technology/data used for all Programme divisions in the field;
  • Represent the Technology Division in workshops, conferences and strategic meetings and provide context for all Programme Divisions in key Technology Division events;
  • Other duties as required.

DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT:

  • Roadmaps for the business areas are updated, relevant and agreed with the relevant divisions.
  • The relevant business divisions meet with TEC senior leadership on a half-yearly basis and see TEC a credible partner to their work
  • High-level processes are mapped alongside key technology used
  • Interdependencies between all Programme divisions are clear, along with interactions with other divisions
  • All Programme divisions are clear on what it means to be digitally transformed and are committed to building WFP’s digital core.

Qualifications & Experience Required:

Education: Advanced University degree in Business Administration, Economics, International Development, or related fields, or First University degree in the same subject(s) with additional years of related work experience.

Experience:

  • 8 years of relevant experience in programme, project management and functional humanitarian experience;
  • At least 5 years of experience in leading field programmes and/or operations;

Technical Skills & Knowledge:

Outstanding communicator, verbal and written.
Solid organisational, prioritisation, project and time management skills, with the ability to coordinate and track multiple projects simultaneously and able to work under pressure.

Competencies:

  • Programme including cash-based transfers
  • Sound knowledge of technology.

Language: Fluency (level C) in English language. Intermediate knowledge (level B) of a second official UN language: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, and/or WFP’s working language, Portuguese is an asset.
