Job Description

Chemonics seeks a chief of party for an anticipated USAID-funded modern energy and sustainable forest management activity in Malawi. This activity will focus on sustainable forest management and alternative energy sources to increase forest cover, reduce land-based greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance livelihoods. The chief of party will be responsible for managing and implementing the activity and serve as the primary liaison with USAID/Malawi, the Malawian government, and other stakeholders. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead and direct the activity to ensure its programmatic and financial integrity
  • Collaborate with the USAID mission (and other donors as applicable), civil society organizations, local government officials, local partners, and universities to coordinate activities and facilitate monitoring of and reporting on activity objectives and achievements
  • Build innovative partnerships, and promote sustainable initiatives
  • Oversee program administration, implementation, and financial management to ensure their alignment with budget allocations, internal Chemonics policies, and USAID regulations
  • Oversee performance monitoring and evaluation to ensure all project targets are met or exceeded, recommending ways to improve program implementation
  • Proactively identify problems involving project implementation, and make appropriate implementation and programmatic adjustments to meet contractual objectives and results


  • Advanced degree (master’s or equivalent) in natural resource management, forestry, renewable energy, or a related field; five additional years of experience in sustainable forest management or a related field may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience implementing and coordinating large, complex projects related to natural resource management or biodiversity conservation; specialization in forestry, renewable energy, low emissions development, or alternative livelihoods development
  • Minimum of five years of proven leadership in the management of similarly sized international donor support programs
  • Demonstrated skills in strategic planning, management, supervision, and budgeting
  • Minimum of five years of experience working with senior government officials, private sector leaders, and other stakeholders in natural resource management, biodiversity conservation, or enforcement of conservation regulations
  • Knowledge of Malawi’s environmental, social, cultural, political, and development context and an understanding of the forestry and energy sectors in Malawi preferred
  • Experience with USAID or other international donors preferred
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with a range of stakeholders
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing
  • Experience in sub-Saharan Africa required; experience in Malawi preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
  • Fluency in English required
