The climate change expert will be working closely with the PMU team on implementing climate-related interventions and activities under the Sudan Health Assistance Response to Emergencies (SHARE) and SHEIP projects (in coordination with the relevant departments, implementing partners, and external entities), specifically with a focus on the following tasks:

Responsibilities:

  • Delivery on the objectives, required outputs, and outcomes as per the World Health Organization (WHO) commitments and agreements with its partners and as per its mandate.
  • Develop action plans to enhance the climate resilience and environmental sustainability of health care facilities (this could be based on the outcomes of the assessments, amongst others).
  • outout implementation plans and overseeing the implementation of climate-related activities.
  • Develop and conduct high-level and specific climate vulnerability assessments, including selected hospitals and public health facilities, and impacts, climate resilience, and environmental sustainability based on the relevant assessment tools.
  • Review the impact of the climate hazards on health facilities (in the recent period) and related lessons learned in terms of “risk mitigation and resilience measures”.
  • Developing and tailoring flood, heat, and other climatic hazards contingency plans, emergency preparedness, and response plans for health care facilities as needed.
  • Work on raising awareness and sensitization on climate change, and its risks, etc., and develop a communication plan on climate change risk to relevant stakeholders
  • Capacity building on climate change and building resilience and providing capacity building, conducting trainings and workshops on climate change and health, assessing climate vulnerabilities and impacts of climate change on health care facilities and health of communities.
  • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental engineering, Public Health, Environmental Sciences or Climate Change
  •  Experience in climate-related field assessment and data collection, preferably health care facilities assessments, and climate change contingency planning.
  • Experience in developing, organizing, and delivering capacity-building workshops and training.
  • Experience in designing, developing, and finalizing preparedness, response, and contingency plans for health-related emergencies and disasters, preferably natural or climate disasters.
  • Good interpersonal, networking, and communication skills.
  • Willingness to contribute and work as part of a team.
  • Flexible and open to learning and new experience.
  • Experience working in the UN and other international development organizations is desirable.
  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting, and presentation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; Emotionally intelligent.
  • Excellent ability to multitask and produce results within a given timeframe, in fast-paced environments.
