UNICEF has a long history of influencing markets and driving product innovation that has increased children’s access to essential commodities. In 1998 these roles were enshrined as critical functions in ‘The organization of UNICEF’ Board document. The UNICEF Strategic Plan 2018-2021 further recognizes the power of business and markets for children as one of the priority change strategies for UNICEF to achieve ambitious results for children and young people.

The related Products and Markets Global Supply Strategy is therefore one of the key elements of the broader UNICEF strategic plan. Its aim is to drive development of essential products for children and young people, and influence markets such that they are available, at an affordable price, to the right quality standards from a competitive, sustainable, and increasingly local, supplier base –through UNICEF or governments directly.

The Innovation Centre (IC) requires a consultant with a proven flair for communicating complex messages and an excellent understanding of product innovation and market influencing, to structure and realize the communication activities for the Products and Markets strategy. The consultant will manage and structure the communication activities of IC to internal and external audiences. All work will be done in collaboration with SD’s Markets and Supplier Financing Centre (MSFC), Strategy, Change and Communication Centre (SCCC), Procurement Centres and other different UNICEF Divisions and offices, as well as externals.


The purpose of this full-time consultancy is to structure and manage the communication activities of the Products and Markets Global Supply Strategy co-led by IC and MSFC.

Main Duties/ Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Innovation Specialist (Strategy & Partnerships), the Communication Consultant’s duties and responsibilities will be to plan and manage communication projects and activities. The tasks include a substantial amount of writing, editing and lay-out work to communicate strategy, knowledge, lessons learned and best practices associated with SD’s Products and Markets work to both internal and external audiences. The consultant will work as part of the team in order to complete communication activities.

Key Deliverables:

Communication Strategy:

  • Update and drive communication strategy for communicating the Products and Markets effort.
  • Work with IC & MSFC team members to drive 2019-20 communication activities to implement the strategy.
  • Structure and carry out 2019-20 communication activities.
  • Drive approval processes and procedures for timely delivery of communication activities.
  • Web communications

Internal web communication:

  • Create and share content on Supply Intranet (SharePoint) and social media (Yammer).
  • Create and share monthly content on internal UNICEF media (such as ICON intranet).

External web communication:

  • Lead the transition of web content to the new web-platform Drupal.
  • Create harmonized web content.
  • Created harmonized one-page project briefs for product innovation projects.
  • Create monthly blog posts and news for the UNICEF Connect website as well as other external facing media.
  • Create bi-annual reports on external web usage.
  • Create an online representation of the Products & Markets futures pipeline.


  • Create and give presentations to internal and external audiences, for example to academia, partners and future partners.
  • Non-web based communication
  • Create a high quality standard presentation to communicate efforts around Products and Markets, projects and achievements for individual events.

Create updates of the standard presentation for the centres.

  • In collaboration with SD’s SCCC, create communication pieces and articles to mark achievements and Products and Markets strategy.
  • Create visualizations and graphics to communicate complex data which can be easily interpreted by external audiences

Innovation Lab:

  • Create concept note for the design and use of an Innovation Lab at UNICEF
  • Design posters/graphics/communication pieces as needed
  • Manage the implementation of the Innovation Lab
  • Products and Markets Exhibition
  • Create concept note for an exhibition of products


The successful candidate shall have:

  • Minimum 5 years professional and relevant work experience in communication
  • Master Degree in Graphic Design, Communication, Journalism, Marketing or another relevant discipline
  • Proven high-level ability to communicate both through words and graphics
  • Experience of content management systems, ideally Drupal
  • Experience in data visualization
  • Working knowledge of UNICEF and the UN

Languages: Fluency in written and spoken English is essential and in another UN language is an advantage.
