Job Description

Chemonics seeks a communications and outreach manager to support its corporate communications strategy for clients in the United Kingdom, including the Department for International Development and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The communications and outreach manager will design and deliver proactive messaging campaigns throughout the year that support Chemonics’ newly launched U.K Division (UKD) and the establishment of a permanent office in the United Kingdom. Coordinating closely with Chemonics’ Strategic Communications Department in Washington, D.C., the communications and outreach manager will develop internal and external corporate communications products and serve as a point of contact for media inquiries in the United Kingdom. Responsibilities include:

  • Develop internal messaging campaigns about the UKD’s activities for Chemonics’ global community that include updates to practice management teams, intranet articles, newsletters, and reports to Chemonics’ Executive Management Team
  • Initiate and develop effective working relationships with Chemonics’ support teams, relevant client contacts, support agencies, media outlets, and journalists relevant to the U.K. market
  • Create and deliver strategic industry engagement campaigns by conceptualizing compelling messages and stories that address key development issues via traditional and digital/social media
  • Produce high-quality press releases, information kits, award submissions, and other materials
  • Serve as a media contact in the United Kingdom, as directed, coordinating with Chemonics’ director of the Strategic Communications Department in Washington, D.C.; proactively develop new media contacts at media outlets and publications relevant to international development, trade, and stabilization
  • Support the design and delivery of the UKD’s communications plan
  • Externally represent Chemonics’ history, values, and standards by attending events, networking with clients and counterparts, and displaying a clear understanding of the past and present portfolio
  • Promote the distribution of Chemonics’ technical thought leadership via digital channels (in coordination with Chemonics headquarters), and arrange for speaking engagements at key industry events
  • Work with UKD technical and project teams to create media posts and content suitable for online and social media sharing
  • Support the production of U.K.-oriented content for Chemonics while collaborating with the Strategic Communications Department in Washington, D.C., to ensure consistent messaging, voice, and tone
  • Support the Strategic Communications Department in Washington, D.C., in tracking and analyzing media coverage, sentiment, and media campaigns’ results on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis; develop responses when needed
  • Support the director of the Strategic Communications Department in Washington, D.C., in developing crisis communications and risk management plans
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of relevant strategic communications and messaging strategies, tools, and activities for client projects
  • Provide support, training, guidance, and advice to UKD technical and project teams about client performance reporting, including how UKD teams can best craft, share, and amplify their project stories for knowledge sharing and learning
  • Promote strategies for effective teamwork and leadership development; cultivate collaborative working relationships across the company
  • Supervise, develop, and evaluate assigned staff
  • Expand professional and technical knowledge through various internal and external training opportunities and resources
  • Help foster a workplace culture that creates opportunity, serves others, builds trust, promotes innovation, and exceeds expectations


  • Degree in a relevant subject or equivalent work experience required; advanced degree preferred
  • Authorization to work in the United Kingdom required
  • Significant professional work experience and supervisory experience in public relations, journalism, marketing, or corporate strategic communications; experience with the Department for International Development or the Foreign and Commonwealth Office preferred
  • Demonstrated experience creating, copy-editing, and proofreading marketing materials in English
  • Ability to write story-driven content about complex technical subjects and projects that engages target audiences and promotes knowledge sharing
  • Sensitivity to diverse audiences and demonstrated good judgement about messaging
  • Demonstrated interviewing and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain strong working relationships with executives, senior technical experts, and staff around the world
  • Ability to work under deadlines with diverse teams and manage production schedules
  • Working knowledge of popular social media outlets (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, Instagram, and YouTube)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop
  • Thorough understanding of and demonstrated experience in speaking confidently with journalists and media directly; ability to forge strong working relationships with media contacts
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing, including delivering effective presentations to large groups
  • Willingness to travel and work abroad for extended periods, including in fragile and high-conflict environments; experience living or working in developing countries preferred
  • Ability to multitask with strong attention to detail, organization, and time management
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
  • Fluency in English required
