Job Description

Background

Under the guidance and direct supervision of CO Communications Officer, the Communications Associate supports the formulation and implementation of the communications and advocacy strategies to increase the standing and awareness of UNDP with partners, the media and the public.

The Communications Associate promotes a client-oriented approach at UNDP. The Communication Associate works in close collaboration with the Programme Staff in the CO, staff of other UN Agencies, UNDP HQs staff (Communications Office) and the Regional Communications Advisor, Government officials, media, multilateral and bilateral donors and civil society. The Communications Associate may supervise support staff of the Communications Unit.

Duties and Responsibilities

Contributes to the enhancement of UNDP’s public image in the CO’s area of responsibility, including the enhancement of social media presence;

  • Preparation of communication and promotional materials in digital and print, to enhance UNDP’s image in the country.
  • Assist UNDP with advocacy activities, including support to public events, launching ceremonies, field visits, workshops, and global UN initiative
  • Utilize social media to spread information to promote UNDP and its work in Turkey.

Supports the formulation and implementation of CO communications and advocacy strategies, supports business development focusing on achievement of the following results:

  • Provision of inputs and information for elaboration of CO communication strategy based on the corporate communications strategy
  • Support to increased awareness of UNDP’s mandate and goals through dissemination of information, organization of public events
  • In coordination with supervisor development and preparation of materials for marketing and awareness-raising including briefing materials and press releases.
  • Organization of publicity, advocacy, knowledge-sharing events and promotional opportunities. Provision of logistics support to the events.
  • Manage the agency’s Social Media presence via Facebook, email marketing, Twitter, Blogs, etc. as directed by management
  • Develop and update various materials such as; program brochures, media kits, key messages, fact sheets, & other collateral material as needed
  • Assist with the coordination of media outreach & coverage with media releases, TV/radio interviews, feature stories, PSAs, press conferences, etc
  • Create and coordinate public speaking engagements with/for agency spokespeople
  • Coordinate photography for/of events, activities, etc. for use in publications, media, etc. and ensure appropriate releases are signed and filed; maintain graphics & photo files.
  • Research and retrieval of data from internal and external sources;
  • Organization and implementation of joint UN information campaigns (UN Day, International Womens’ Day, etc).
  • Integrate communication means to support relevant strategic outcomes in line with UNDP CO’s strategic framework.
  • Regular preparation of press releases, speeches, Web/Social Media content and articles on behalf of the Resident Representative for UNDP related events in Turkey.

Support implementation of the CO publications policy and graphics standard focusing on the achievement of the following results:

  • Suggestions, inputs, content development, coordination of production and dissemination of press releases, publications, articles and sharing of CO knowledge and successes.

Ensures maintenance of web sites, data bases and knowledge management systems

  • Updates and maintains CO web sites in line with corporate branding requirements.
  • Preparation of the content for the web sites ensuring consistency of the materials.
  • Maintenance of other web sites, social media platforms and databases as assigned.

Ensures facilitation of knowledge building and management

  • Support to CO staff and project teams/personnel in identification, documenting and drafting of best practices and lessons learned.
  • Organization of training for the CO staff and project personnel on effective communications and advocacy.

Required Skills and Experience

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in relevant area: Social Sciences, Communications, Media and Design.

Experience:

  • 6 years of relevant experience in international organizations media and/or communication related activities is required
  • Experience from international organization or with development issues is an advantage.
  • Existing knowledge on Turkey based media is a distinct advantage.
  • Experience in the specific software packages is required (Office: MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc)
  • Experience in software for creative communication use is a distinct advantage, for example from Adobe CC)

Language Requirements: Fluency in English and Turkish. Other official language of the UN will be desirable
