  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in Japanese and English
  • Japan or Asia based, must be eligible to work in the country of residence

The Organisation

Driven by a passion to solve the climate crisis, The Sunrise Project is an international team of campaigners, researchers and communications professionals with a mission to strengthen social movements accelerating the global transition away from fossil fuels. The Sunrise Project has developed a unique model of grant making and campaigning that supports networks of organisations to drive change towards its mission. We move fast and embrace the urgency of the climate challenge.

The world has seen recent shifts by financial institutions, banks, investors, insurance companies and central banks away from fossil fuels, particularly coal. Japanese has mostly lagged behind this trend, threatening to undermine the progress other countries have made.

Culture & Benefits

The Sunrise Project has a dynamic and nimble organisational culture that supports its people to thrive, believing that a diversity of experiences and perspectives builds stronger strategies, teams and movements. We are continually working on becoming a better workplace for everyone and are committed to creating a workplace that supports all staff to achieve their professional best. The following benefits are in place to help achieve that;

  • Generous annual, parental, birthday and cultural leave
  • Commitment to professional development and employee assistance programs
  • Coaching, performance reviews & management feedback to support you and the team

The Role

Working with colleagues, partners, and international allies you will develop ideas and implement strategies to stop Japanese insurance companies from insuring new fossil fuel projects, particularly in the coal sector. Working with coalitions both inside and outside Japan, you will also focus on diving deep into the context, situational and power analysis of the Central Bank of Japan to scope ideas and strategies to engage the Bank to end its relationship with fossil fuels. Other key responsibilities will include;

  • Managing a small portfolio of grants to support these partners
  • Writing compelling briefing papers and develop public communication materials

Skills Required

You have a sophisticated understanding of the Japanese finance system, political culture and the socio-economic system. If you are not already, and with our support, you will quickly become an expert in insurance companies and central banks. You have an understanding of how change happens in business with the ability to turn information into real world change via practical interventions. Ideally you know how civil society drives that change.

You need to be a natural collaborator, a strong facilitator and have a global perspective to be able to digest complex, technical subjects presenting them in engaging language to non-expert audiences.

Of course you are passionate about addressing climate change, a creative thinker with bold ideas about how we can achieve the change we need.

If you want to help solve the climate crisis and meet all or some of the requirements, or are unsure, please submit an expression of interest as the Sunrise Project values and recognizes unpaid and lived experiences. Your EOI includes a cover letter responding to the skills required above and resume to quoting #790830. Alternatively, contact Lois Freeke from NGO Recruitment in Australia on +61 2 8243 0570.
