Within Treasury, the capital markets, investments & financial products department (CMI) is responsible for managing annual funding programs for IBRD (approx. $40-50 billion) and IDA (approx. $5-10 billion) and building sustainable capital markets, managing liquid asset portfolios for IBRD and IDA, and the asset and liability management aimed at reducing risk on IBRD and IDA’s balance sheets. CMI also advises clients on loans and risk management products, and structures financial products for development. CMI places strong emphasis on achieving the best possible financial terms within prudent market, liquidity, credit, operational and reputational risk parameters. CMI is comprised of six teams carrying out these responsibilities. The working environment is fast-paced and dynamic, as the teams regularly deal with new ideas, projects and challenges.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Financial Analyst will be a member of Investor Relations & Sustainable Finance team with roles and responsibilities outlined below:

Data Management, Analysis, and Research: 

  • Collect, review, and organize information on IBRD and IDA for reporting to investors, including data and analysis required for impact reports and communicating with research firms and providers of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) data.
  • Research sustainable investor and ESG trends and provide related analytical data support for investor analysis and investor relations products (e.g., impact report, investor presentations, newsletters)
  • Research new and stay informed of updates to existing methodologies and practices of ESG research firms and data providers and related products such as ESG scores, sustainability indices, external review/second party opinion services, and data services related to sustainable finance regulation
  • Research, identify, and assess the direct and indirect impact of the growing body of sustainable finance regulation globally on capital market activities for IBRD and IDA
  • Provide analytical support to the funding and investment teams as needed
  • Other ad hoc analytical and research support for CMI colleagues

Communicate World Bank’s Funding and Development Activities: 

  • Participate in and support the team’s European and other investor outreach activities
  • Create and update other investor communication materials, including financial, funding, project and ESG-relevant information for the website, presentations, newsletters, etc. for financial market audiences
  • Participate in communicating Treasury’s interests with ESG-focused counterparts at the World Bank through formal and informal dialogue and working groups
  • Draft responses to ESG questionnaires/queries from ESG data firms, World Bank bond investors, and management
  • Support the dialogue with ESG data firms, sustainability standards bodies, and others that are shaping the ESG/sustainable finance landscape (e.g., parties responsible for sustainable finance regulation, taxonomy, etc.)
  • Prepare briefing materials and support team in writing blogs, articles, and related materials

Selection Criteria:

  • Master’s degree in development and/or finance or related field of study. 
  • Minimum of two years capital markets or development finance experience specifically in the space of sustainable finance/ESG investing. 
  • Solid foundation in quantitative skills including data analytics and experience handling large data sets, programming skills are a plus.
  • Ability to work quickly across teams to meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to conduct research and analysis on difficult, but well-defined tasks; articulate issues and recommend solutions.
  • Ability to draft components of major reports, working papers, etc.
  • Attention to detail and comfort in multitasking
  • Good oral and written skills in English with the ability to interpret and present data.
  • Knowledge of German, French, Spanish, or Italian would also be an advantage.
