The United Network of Young Peacebuilders (UNOY Peacebuilders) is currently seeking a consultant for the role of Fundraising Strategist to support and increase its global financial sustainability. The Fundraising Strategist will facilitate UNOY Peacebuilders’ process of becoming a financially sustainable network and support efforts towards its long-term financial growth, increase in capacity, and sustainable action.

Background and current challenges
Accessing sustainable funding is a persistent challenge for youth organizations working in the peace and security field. A majority of the youth-led organizations operate with limited funding, with 49% operating under USD 5,000 per annum and only 11% over USD 100,000 - as demonstrated by the report Mapping a Sector: Bridging the Evidence-base on Youth-Driven Peacebuilding (UNOY Peacebuilders and SFCG, 2017). In 2016, an average of 71% of the grant applications submitted by member organisations of the United Network of Young Peacebuilders (UNOY Peacebuilders) were unsuccessful.
This challenge is also felt at the global level of UNOY Peacebuilders. UNOY Peacebuilders was founded nearly 30 years ago, but did not have paid staff until 2008. In the last decade the annual turnover has grown from 150,000 to 300,000 EUR, shifting between a positive and negative result every two years. These fluctuations bring forth uncertainty that is not conducive to long-term financial growth, increase in capacity, and sustainable action. The funding which UNOY Peacebuilders has managed to secure is often short-term, project-based, and restricted to support activities in Europe.
With the adoption of UNSCR 2250 and the shaping of a new Youth, Peace and Security sector, UNOY Peacebuilders has entered into a new phase where the need for network-wide financial sustainability is stronger than ever.
The Fundraising Strategist will facilitate UNOY Peacebuilders’ process of becoming a financially sustainable network and support efforts towards its long-term financial growth and organisational development. Specifically, the Fundraising Strategist will lead the following actions and develop the following outputs:
Conduct an assessment of UNOY Peacebuilders’ current fundraising practices and gaps, and an in-depth analysis of peace, security and development funders and funding trends through desk-based research and interviews, to identify both potential long-term donors internationally and regionally and new sources of funding.
Provide expert input and support to the International Secretariat in developing a captivating and coherent story about UNOY Peacebuilders’ structure, work and impact tailored to different types of donors, in order to enhance its visibility in the donor landscape.
On the basis of a model proposed by the International Secretariat, develop a fundraising roadmap for UNOY Peacebuilders, operating a shift from short-term and project-based to longer-term core funding that enables global and regional interventions.
Provide support to the initial implementation of outputs listed under 1-3, including ad hoc process support, and advice on necessary adjustments of the outputs

Additionally, the International Secretariat will provide general project management support, IT and financial management. PeaceNexus provides both technical and financial support to this process through an Organisational Development grant. This consultancy will be managed in four phases, with each new phase depending on satisfactory delivery of the outputs of the previous phase.
