Reporting to the Programme Coordinator on Humanitarian Action, the Intern will work closely with the Humanitarian Action, Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change team in the Regional Office  and support on the programme development, implementation and results-based management within the humanitarian, disaster risk reduction and climate change ongoing programming. The Regional Office is a key player in delivering humanitarian aid and disaster risk reduction programmes across the region. The team's work is underpinned by a commitment to ensuring that the most vulnerable and marginalized communities are not left behind and have access to the support and resources they need to build resilience. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn about the day-to-day operations of a regional office and gain hands-on experience in the area of humanitarian action, disaster risk reduction, and climate change. The Intern will work with a team of experienced professionals who are committed to improving the lives of vulnerable communities affected by disasters and climate change and to ensure the integration of gender equality in the humanitarian assistance. The Intern will be involved in a range of activities, including research, analysis, report writing, program design, and monitoring and evaluation. The role is ideal for someone who is passionate about making a difference and wants to gain practical experience in the humanitarian and development sector. The Intern will also play an important role in supporting ongoing programming, contributing to the development of new initiatives, and ensuring that the team is well-coordinated and informed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Humanitarian Action, Disaster Risk Reduction, and Climate Change Intern will work closely with the team in the Regional Office to support the development, implementation, and results-based management of ongoing programming in the areas of humanitarian action, disaster risk reduction, and climate change. The Intern will be involved in a range of activities, including research, analysis, report writing, program design, monitoring and evaluation, gender equality, and social inclusion. The Intern will have the opportunity to learn about the day-to-day operations of a regional office and gain hands-on experience in the humanitarian and development sector. In addition, the Intern will also have the opportunity to support knowledge and data management activities, including the development and maintenance of knowledge management systems, the collection and analysis of program data, and the preparation of internal and external reports and communication materials. The intern may also participate in training and capacity building activities related to program development, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation, as well as provide administrative and logistical support to the team

Objectives include:

  • Assist the team in developing proposals, reports, and programme-related documents, ensuring accuracy and compliance with the organization's guidelines and donor requirements.
  • Conduct need based research and analysis on topics related to humanitarian action, disaster risk reduction, and climate change, and provide concise summaries and recommendations to the team.
  • Assist in organizing and conducting meetings, workshops, and other events related to ongoing programming, ensuring effective communication and coordination among stakeholders.
  • Support the team in monitoring and evaluating programme implementation, including data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of key issues and trends in the fields of humanitarian action, disaster risk reduction, and climate change, and share relevant information and resources with the team.

  • Enhance research and analytical skills by conducting in-depth research on topics related to humanitarian action, disaster risk reduction, and climate change, and effectively summarizing findings and providing recommendations.
  • Develop strong organizational and communication skills through involvement in organizing and facilitating meetings, workshops, and events, fostering effective collaboration among stakeholders.
  • Acquire hands-on experience in monitoring and evaluating programme implementation, including data collection, analysis, and reporting, to gain insights into project effectiveness and impact.
  • Expand knowledge and understanding of key issues and trends in humanitarian action, disaster risk reduction, and climate change, by staying updated with the latest information and sharing relevant resources with the team.

Required Skills and Experience:

Education:

  • University studies in one of the following disciplines: international relations, disaster risk reduction, climate change or other relevant subjects is required.
  • Meet one of the following:
  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent);
  • Be enrolled in a mandatory national service programme of which the internship may form a part;
  • Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within two-years of graduation.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.
