About IRRI

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is the world’s premier research organization dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger through rice science; improving the health and welfare of rice farmers and consumers; and protecting the rice-growing environment for future generations. IRRI is an independent, nonprofit, research and educational institute, founded in 1960 by the Ford and Rockefeller foundations with support from the Philippine government. The institute, headquartered in Los Baños, Philippines, has offices in 17 rice-growing countries in Asia and Africa, and over 1,000 staff.

Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.

Job Purpose

The Integrative Research Support Platform brings together the various research support and operational services across IRRI including the Software Development, Database and Statistical Services (SDDSS). The SDDSS will work with Outcome Themes, develop, test and release software applications that translates science into ICT (Information and Communications Technology). Support the standardization, capture, storage and curation of data in centralized and accessible IRRI databases. Recommend and train data capture technologies.

Under the general direction of the supervisor plan, design, and develop web applications and Application Programming Interfaces ensuring adherence to set objectives and requirements. Coordinate with the design team, project consultants and collaborators during the development phase. Provide technical support to the storage and retrieval of data, and deployment of the systems. Conduct information sessions to key stakeholders on the use of the new applications.

This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and may only be filled by permanent citizens of the Philippines.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Support the software development and database life cycle including the designing, development, maintenance, troubleshooting and testing, and evaluation ensuring adherence to project objectives and requirements
  • Participate in the creation of software requirements and carry out software development tasks according to set best practices and agreed principles
  • Work closely with end-users and design team on the development of software and databases and provide training on the use of ir access as required
  • Provide technical support to end-users (e.g. software support for users) and facilitate requests
  • Produce documentations and materials such as codes, tables, and reports
  • Manage the storage and retrieval of data and information
  • Set-up and install software and see dependencies on servers
  • Create back-ups of software and content
  • Develop manuals user-training materials and/or modules

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent IT related course with minimum 2 years of work experience

Skills Required

Mandatory

  • Knowledge in computer software and programming
  • Experience in designing software programs/databases
  • Knowledge of and experience in several languages and relational database programming (Oracle/PostgreSQL/MySQL)
  • Knowledge of different operating systems
  • Knowledge and experience in application/web programming/scripting languages such as HTML5, PHP, Javascript and CSS
  • Basic understanding of web service development

Preferred: Knowledgeable in IRRI’s genotyping and germplasm database
