Job Description


Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Head of Coordination Unit, the National Reporting Officer (NRO) has a specific responsibility to support OCHA Turkey as follows:

  • draft documents such as: reports, flash updates, situation updates, talking points, meeting minutes, context updates based on information gathered from various stakeholders;
  • disseminate information and policies to the humanitarian community, authorities, donors and others as directed;
  • assist in information gathering and production of OCHA materials;
  • help identify humanitarian priorities and needs;
  • disseminate information on the impact of the Syria crisis, the humanitarian response and the need for international assistance; and
  • work closely with the OCHA Turkey Access Unit to ensure accurate contextual information
  • work closely with the inter-cluster coordinator and offer support on inter-cluster-related matters
  • assists in communications/public information tasks as required
  • supports liaison with external stakeholders as required

The NRO works in close collaboration with the OCHA Turkey management, humanitarian fund, information management unit, and coordination teams, NGOs, programme staff in other UN Agencies and OCHA HQ staff. The NRO will work as part of the Coordination Unit.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the OCHA Turkey Head of Office and under the day-to-day guidance of the Head of Coordination Unit, the NRO is expected to perform the following tasks:

  •  Monitor, research, analyze and present information gathered from diverse sources on humanitarian issues in relation to the Syria crisis.
  •  Contribute to the preparation of various written documents and information communications products, e.g. background papers, correspondence and presentations, Situation Reports etc. This includes proposing topics, undertaking research, conducting interviews, writing drafts, obtaining clearances, finalizing texts and ensuring distribution to agreed target audiences.
  • Assist in the production of appeals and resource mobilization for international humanitarian assistance.
  • Assist in the organization of meetings, conferences, workshops and other coordination and advocacy events. Attend and prepare detailed minutes and reports on meetings of relevance to OCHA. Prepare for and accompany visiting UN and donor missions.
  •  Assist in liaising with media, the general public, and other external stakeholders as required, including input into communications planning.
  • Initiate and sustain professional relationships with key constituencies.
  • Offer translation/interpretation services when required
  • Perform other duties, as required.

Required Skills and Experience


  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in political or social sciences or related field with additional 2 years of relevant experience.


  • 2 years of relevant working experience in the Syrian context, or equivalent. Familiarity with and good knowledge of the Syria crisis and the humanitarian assistance effort to Syria is strongly desired.
  • Excellent writing, analytical and communication skills in English required

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English and Turkish are required. Knowledge of Arabic is an asset.


  • Experience in the use of computers and office software packages and handling of web-based management systems.
  • Proven abilities in data collection, compilation, analysis and reporting with ability to write in a clear and concise manner and effective oral communication.
  • Proven skills in conducting and participating in meetings and reporting thereof.
  • Ability to prioritise multiple tasks within an environment where many interruptions occur.
  • Ability to work with multi-cultural teams and international professionals.
  • Availability and fitness for travel.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
