The role:

We are looking for a policy and advocacy officer to maintain and develop positive and influential relationships with political institutions, political parties and politicians in Wales. This will allow Oxfam Cymru to lobby effectively on a wide variety of issues with the above stakeholders.

You will identify and research key opportunities to secure policy and practice change, relating to poverty eradication locally and globally. Whilst primarily concerned with political institutions, this will also involve working with the private sector, other non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and academics.

You will ensure that assembly members, Welsh MPs and Welsh Members of European Parliaments are appropriately briefed on all relevant issues. Simultaneously, you will also coordinate research projects amongst Oxfam Cymru’s partners and identify key external stakeholders. You will also develop policy priorities and deliver advocacy work for Oxfam Cymru.

This is an amazing and unique role where no two days are the same! You will have a chance to make a true difference to Oxfam Cymru’s work as well as ending inequality and poverty within Wales by developing and advocating joint policy positions with Welsh Politicians!

What we are looking for:

  • Excellent negotiation and influencing skills to develop good working relationships within Oxfam and with political audiences.
  • Professional communication skills, gained within a policy, think tank or political environment, to communicate and adapt complex policy and development issues to different levels of target audience.
  • Well-developed research and analytical skills.
  • Ability to represent Oxfam to high profile external audiences.
  • Interest in and knowledge of political institutions, processes and opportunities for influence in Wales.
  • Passion for and knowledge of international development and humanitarian issues.
  • Commitment to Oxfam’s values and an understanding of gender and diversity.
  • An ability to think and operate creatively, and proven experience of delivering successful results.
  • Strong team working skills with an ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • An understanding of poverty and inequality in Wales / UK.
  • The ability to communicate effectively in Welsh is strongly desirable.
