Job Description

Background

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN’s global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. UNDP works through 136 country offices to provide development advocacy, advice and assistance to 166 countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Arab States, Eastern Europe, CIS, Latin America and the Caribbean, working to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The SDG Integration Team sits at the center of UNDP’s Global Policy Network (GPN), with the aim to advance and connect UNDP’s integrated services across sectors and countries to support implementation of the 2030 Agenda. The SDG Integration Team builds a coherent and consolidated menu of services emphasizing direct short- to medium-term engagements to support countries in formulating evidence informed integrated policy solutions using state-of-art tools and data. UNDP’s offer on SDG integration is anchored on four key enabling services areas, including: Integrated Policy Solutions; SDG data, metrics, and analytics; Knowledge and Innovation; and SDG finance. In this effort UNDP has been partnering with key agencies, academia and think tanks to drive research on innovative policy solutions and approaches to integrated support on the SDGs and tailor tools to country needs and make them available to governments, including building capacities in countries to have lasting impact.

This internship will focus on (a) supporting integrated policy analysis for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda; and (b) supporting research on a broad range of sustainable development issues, including political economy and legal analysis of the data revolution for sustainable development.

Duties and Responsibilities

The intern’s main tasks will include one or more of the following:

  • Supporting analysis of the political economy, legal and ethical dimensions of the data revolution for sustainable development, and helping assess their implications for the SDGs;
  • Providing research support on analysis of policy options for accelerating the implementation of the SDGs, using integrated modelling tools;
  • Supporting the development of policy papers, studies, reports, briefing notes, and speeches, as requested by the supervisor;
  • Providing support in the organization of workshop and events, including related to UN inter-governmental processes relating to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation

Language Requirements:

  • Proficient in written and spoken English. Knowledge of another UN language would be an asset.
