Job Description

The Job:

  • As a research scientist and knowledge broker, the PDF will utilize ICRISAT and its partners ‘research for development’ findings to develop training tools and extension information which is then used to build capacity in the farming communities of Mali to adapt to climate variability and change.
  • The PDF will provide technical support for sharing ICRISAT’s experiences and technologies with farmers and stakeholders across topics such as integrated crop and soil management, climate science, seed systems, and scaling out new cereal or legume germplasm.

Furthermore, s/he will:

  • Use participatory research methodologies with farming communities to adapt and improve the uptake of technological packages for more resilient farming systems
  • Identify effective ways to bring adaptive practices and technologies, through extension, to vulnerable communities. Advise national scientific and technical partners on these strategies
  • Prepare/update training manuals for climate smart agricultural practices
  • Provide technical support for a field-training manual on effective use of seasonal climate forecasting information to support climate related training
  • Coordinate training for trainer’s events on climate smart agricultural practices and the use of climate forecasting information
  • Support capacity building through various communication initiatives including the use and sharing of ICRISAT developed DVDs
  • Enhance linkages and sharing of ICRISAT experiences with seed system development and climate change resiliency activities
  • Contribute to BRACED findings and lessons learned in Malian science policy dialogues
  • Contribute to the coordination of capacity development in the National Agency for Environment and Sustainable Development (AEDD) to enhance multi-sectoral planning and programming of climate change adaptation activities by government at a national and at a regional scale

The Person

  • PhD in systems agronomy, agro-meteorology, climate science or resilience studies with a focus on agriculture
  • Experience with participatory action research methods and systems based agronomic field studies which incorporate the use of climate information for promoting farm-household resilience
  • Experience with extension and adult training in agriculture and climate change
  • Should be fluent in French
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Interest and physical ability to work in semi-arid West-Africa
  • Interest to conduct research in the context of development work

The Reward:

  • The Post-Doc Fellow will be based at ICRISAT in Bamako, Mali
  • The Fellowship is for a period of 2 years with a probation period of 12 months and it is extendable based on funding availability and performance
  • An attractive compensation in US Dollars will be offered to the right candidate
