IFC Equity Mobilization Department (AMC) within the Treasury & Mobilization Vice President Unit (VPU) at IFC, mobilizes and manages equity capital for private enterprises in emerging markets. AMC was created in 2009 to provide investors with access to IFC’s emerging markets investment pipeline and to expand the supply of long-term capital to these economies, supporting their development objectives while generating acceptable returns for investors by leveraging IFC’s global reach, standards, investment approach, and track record. AMC has raised US$10.2 billion through 13 investment funds that invest across a variety of sectors, geographies, and themes.

IFC is seeking a Principal Investment Officer to join the AMC to provide fund raising expertise for IFC’s equity mobilization in major fund-raising centers. In addition to playing a key role in AMC’s fund-raising activities across all major fund-raising geographies, the role will include identifying and developing, investor partnerships, managing the relationships and working on relevant corporate initiatives to enhance IFC’s strategic positioning in these geographies, while, working closely with the broader IFC and World Bank teams.
S/he will be based in Washington DC and will report to the Director of AMC.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a detailed fund-raising plan for impact-oriented investors to support newly developed funds.
  • Research, identify and assess prospective new investors across a range of profiles
  • Develop fund raising and marketing strategies for new investors
  • Provide key market insights and knowhow to support AMC’s decision-making on new funds and fundraising plans
  • Develop marketing and investor materials and fund raising and network events for both potential and existing investors define a structured communication plan for existing investors
  • Strengthen relationships with investors and potential investors
  • Develop and manage the investor database (investor profiles and interactions)
  • Work closely with the AMC’s Fund Heads and other appropriate IFC departments in implementing effective fund administration, including investor liaison and reporting
  • Work closely with AMC Director and other senior professionals on developing AMC’s new product development strategy
  • Play a key role in developing new and scalable equity mobilization products and successfully fundraising for them
  • Work closely with other fund-raising units within IFC to ensure a coordinated approach.

Selection Criteria

  • At least [12-15] years of work experience, ideally in emerging markets, of which at least [5-8] years of private equity and fundraising experience
  • Master’s degree or equivalent academic qualification in a relevant discipline
  • Strong and established relationships at the highest level with institutional investors in the impact investment space including pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, particularly those in developed markets
  • Exceptional interpersonal and marketing skills
  • Proven track record and experience in fund raising in successfully closing large investment vehicles
  • Strong impact investing background in emerging markets
  • Understanding of private equity fundraising, structures, operations, and investment processes
  • Strong financial analytical and business management skills and exceptional attention to detail
  • The ability to work effectively across organizational boundaries and to build networks across the industry
  • Self-starter, pro-active, results oriented with ability to function as a senior individual contributor
  • Strong organizational skills and project management experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required, including a demonstrated ability to communicate complex business messages into clear communication messages and materials
  • A willingness for extensive travel is required
  • Deep understanding of IFC, its mission and operations is critical with a genuine commitment to development and to the mission, strategy, and values of IFC and wider World Bank Group
  • Sensitivity for working in multicultural environment, commitment to diversity, and ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues / clients / partners across regions, sectors, and business lines
  • Must excel at emotional intelligence with the necessary skills to coach, develop and inspire direct reports and other team members. Ability to lead by example to build credibility and trust to encourage subordinates to excel and form high performance teams.
