UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN Women’s Regional Office for the Arab States (ROAS) has recently adopted its new Strategic Note (2022-25). ROAS’ vision is to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls and the full enjoyment of their human rights in the Arab States, propelling justice and sustainable development for all. ROAS’ goal is to accelerate achievements for the largest possible numbers of women and girls in the region, including the most vulnerable, in the next four years. To accomplish this, we work with our partners and offices across 17 countries in the region to implement targeted programmes that support social norms change for gender equality -including through the transformation of patriarchal masculinities-, ending violence against women, women’s economic empowerment, women’s leadership and participation, as well as women, peace and security and humanitarian issues.

UN Women in the Arab States has been at the forefront globally in our work to promote social norms change for gender equality and women’s empowerment (GEWE) and transform patriarchal masculinities. This unique portfolio builds upon the solid lessons learnt and critical results achieved since 2015 under the UN Women’s regional programme ‘Men and Women for Gender Equality’, funded by Sweden.

In the Arab States, UN Women has been working to End Violence Against Women (EVAW) leading and supporting the roll out of several programmes on ending violence against women in the region. Under the new strategic plan, focus is on domestic violence and violence in the public space in line with UN Women’s triple mandate at the normative, Coordination and operational level to ensure women and girls in the region live a life free from violence.
