UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. UN Women has been working in Lebanon since 2015 to address the economic and social needs of refugees and host communities in close cooperation with the Government of Lebanon. UN Women Lebanon works on issues of women’s political participation, peace and security, economic empowerment and changing social norms around gender and masculinities.
Under the UN Women’s Lebanon country portfolio, UN Women is implementing a joint three-year project with UNDP “Women’s Participation in Leadership”, which includes three pillars that seek to support multidimensional approaches that address both the practical and structural constraints to women’s voice, decision-making and leadership— targeting support to women’s leadership in more traditional elected spaces (for Parliament and local government), as well as elected leadership in civic spaces.
