Programme Management Officer

The Programme Management Officer reports to the Director of the Division for Sustainable Development Goals and will support the work of the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy on Water. The Programme Management Officer also works closely with the Chief of the Natural Resources and Interlinkages Branch. The position is based in Jakarta.

Responsibilities:

  • Undertakes research on the identification of new and emerging sustainable development issues in the area of water and sanitation and their interlinkages with the Sustainable Development Goals as reflected in the 2030 Agenda; presents analysis of information gathered and reviewed from diverse sources with plausible recommendations for the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy on Water. 
  • Organizes and prepares written outputs, such as draft background papers, analytical briefs, sections of reports and studies, and inputs to publications, to support the substantive capacity and resources of the Office of the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy on Water, in consultation with the Division for Sustainable Development Goals/Natural Resources and Interlinkages Branch.
  • Initiates and coordinates outreach activities for the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy on Water; delivers presentations on assigned topics and activities. 
  • Drafts speeches, remarks, and presentations for the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy on Water, and delivers presentations on her behalf at various forums—intergovernmental, governmental, inter-agency, expert, or multi-stakeholder—including on water and sanitation and their interlinkages with the Sustainable Development Goals as reflected in the 2030 Agenda.
  • Supports the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy on Water in developing and maintaining relations with senior officials of Member States and responds to requests for advice and/or capacity development on sustainable development issues and policies, including leading capacity development missions.
  • Provides substantive backstopping to consultative and other meetings and conferences, including proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, and preparing documents and presentations.
  • Coordinates activities related to budget and funding, including programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, and financial statements; and prepares related documents and reports (e.g., pledging documents, work programme, programme budget).
  • Performs other duties as required

Education:

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in business administration, international relations, economics or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
  • Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programmes in data analytics, business analytics or data science is an advantage.

Work Experience:

  • A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration, or a related area is required.   
  • Experience in policy-oriented work across a broad range of social and human development issues, particularly with a focus on multilateral arrangements and coordination in an international setting, is required.   
  • Experience with intergovernmental processes is required.   
  • Experience in building and managing multi-stakeholder networks and partnerships is desirable.   
  • 2 years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Languages:

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
