The ambitious Sports for Nature Action Campaign aims to mainstream support for nature across the sporting community; and, leading by example, inspire others to contribute to the global goals for biodiversity. The Action Campaign will require working in close collaboration with the IUCN Union, donor and institutional partners as well as with sports organisations around the world, among others.

The Sports for Nature Action Campaign sits in IUCN Heritage, Culture and Youth Team. Working as part of a team under the supervision of the Manager of the Action Campaign, the Programme Officer will be responsible for ensuring the development and implementation of the first-ever Sports for Nature Framework, related toolkits, training and technical support. Specific tasks will include:

  • Develop, test and pilot a new Sports for Nature Framework that allows sports to advance their commitments and actions for nature, and report against a set of defined KPIs;
  • Establish a reporting framework, and create and manage a new portal for Framework signatories to report on their progress, based on the KPIs;
  • Provide support to the Sports for Nature Advisory Group as well as to possible working groups established with signatories to support the uptake of the Framework.
  • Recommend and put in place technical measures to ensure linkages to Post-2020 UN Global Biodiversity Framework and IUCN’s Contributions Platform, to strengthen the reporting, training and learning. ,
  • Ensure efficient coordination, including with the Convention on Biological Diversity Secretariat on the registration of commitments of sporting organisations to the Sports for Nature Framework;
  • Develop and adapt a Sports for Nature toolbox to help sports organisations reduce their footprint on nature and measure their progress towards their nature commitments, in ways that are relevant and implementable for different sports;
  • Produce a suite of customised training materials and presentations to facilitate the uptake of the Framework and build sports’ capacity on biodiversity-related issues;
  • Coordinate a “help desk” function to respond to sports organisations’ questions and challenges, and host periodic webinars to deepen their understanding and learning;
  • Liaise continuously with international sports organisations, partners, experts and consultants providing technical input on the Framework and training materials, and to ensure engagement and uptake;
  • Draft correspondence, briefings and other materials as requested, along with regular updates on the Sports for Nature Framework signatories’ progress;
  • Provide technical input, data and training to inform the Action Campaign as it is developed and rolled-out with target audiences;
  • Identify and compile case studies that can be featured on the PANORAMA portal as well as in other communications;
  • Undertake a range of administrative functions on a day-to-day basis (e.g., processing of invoices, contracts and financial reports).


  • A master’s degree with a focus on environmental science, natural resource management, monitoring and evaluation, or any other discipline that is relevant to nature and sports.
  • Demonstrable understanding and interest in the engagement of sports organisations in biodiversity conservation, including ability to engage and understand motivations, and build capacity of sporting organisations by developing products and services that meet their needs.
  • Knowledge of multilateral environmental agreements, particularly the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, and/or in providing technical guidance to non-experts is an asset.
  • Affinity with the vision and mission of IUCN is a requirement and a strong interest in and understanding of IUCN conservation standards, tools and systems is an advantage.
  • Excellent level of written and spoken English proficiency in other languages, especially French is desirable.
  • Good organisational, administrative and reporting skills; strong writing skills; and IT literacy, particularly in MS Office, and Geographical Information Systems.
  • Experience developing and implementing user-friendly platforms and/or reporting mechanisms on environmental performance is an advantage.
  • Ability to work independently and on multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines without compromising on quality.
  • Highly motivated to learn and develop new skills; and keen to voice ideas.
  • A team player with strong interpersonal skills, including an ability easily adapt and thrive in a multi-cultural setting.
