Under the overall authority of the Director of the UNESCO Office for the Gulf States and Yemen and direct supervison of the Project Manager, the incumbent will contribute to the implementation of the project "Youth Employment through Heritage and Culture in Yemen” (hereafter referred to as "the project"). 

The overall aim of the Project is to contribute to improving livelihood opportunities for women and youth in Yemen through jobs creation in heritage rehabilitation and cultural industries. Specific objectives are to support at least 6,000 youth in rehabilitation sector and 2,000 in sustainable cultural entrepreneurship, contribute to social cohesion, peacebuilding and promotion of cultural heritage in Yemen.  Employment opportunities will be generated through rehabilitation of historic urban centers in different governorates, and support to small and medium enterprises and CSOs active in various sectors of the cultural and creative industries. By creating jobs in the preservation of cultural heritage and creative industries, the intervention will reach young people and contribute to peacebuilding because young people are societal actors that have the potential and capacities to engage and lead actions that will promote peace and sustainable development in their communities. The promotion of arts and culture throughout the project will play an important role in restoring cultural identity, peacebuilding and recovery, as well as rebuild trust in local communities. 
The incumbent shall contribute to implementation of activities/projects through providing assistance to the Project Manager and the project team in planning, implementation, monitoring, evaluation etc. of all activities related to rehabilitation of traditional houses and infrastructure through the cash for work modality.
The incumbent will be based in Doha. 

Main Duties And Responsibilities

The incumbent will contribute to implementation of the cash for work component of the project in rehabilitation of traditional houses and infrastructure in different cities in Yemen. Major responsibilities include:

  • Prepare and/or review all technical documentation related to the project including technical studies, BoQs, assessments, call for proposals etc. Prepare relevant reports, briefings, statistical information etc.
  • Contribute to the establishment, management and monitoring of contracts and relationships with multiple implementing partners covering the range of expertise in the field of rehabilitation/reconstruction of traditional assets, in compliance with the rules and regulations of UNESCO 
  • Assist the Project Manager by supporting strategic planning and weekly follow-up with implementing partners, synthesizing data and information received from the field (livelihood enhancement, urban rehabilitation), evaluating outputs and drafting follow-up correspondence
  • Assist in organizing stakeholder meetings, capacity building workshops, steering committee meetings, public and awareness raising events.
  • Liaise and facilitate consultation between the relevant government authorities in Yemen, CSOs, suppliers, individual experts and local community stakeholders as required and necessary. Regularly share information and documentation with the WHC about rehabilitation of traditional buildings within the WH properties.
  •  Contribute to preparation of relevant employment strategies, collect data and prepare relevant statistics on employment figures
  • Facilitate information sharing amongst stakeholders and partners, prepare briefings, reports, communication and other relevant documents and materials.
  • Conduct missions to Yemen to monitor implementation of activities.

Required Qualifications

Academic qualifications

  • University degree in architecture, conservation, engineering or relevant field. 

Years of relevant work experience

  • University degree with minimum of four (4) years of relevant work experience in conservation, architecture or relevant or Advanced University degree with minimum of two (2) years of relevant work experience.
  • Work experience in the UN system will be an advantage. 

Language requirement      

  • Excellent knowledge of English language (both written and spoken);
  • Good knowledge of Arabic language will be an advantage.
