Job Description

About PCi

Peaceful Change initiative (PCi) is a not-for-profit network, registered in the UK, with operations in North Africa, the Middle East and Ukraine. It was founded in 2012, shortly after the uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa, with the aspiration of responding to some of the challenges facing those societies at a time of such significant and conflictual change. To that end, we:

  • Work to support more effective management of conflict in societies undergoing significant change, by increasing skills and opportunities for dialogue, inclusion and collaboration.
  • Work at the local, national and international levels to mitigate the effects of violence on people’s lives, while laying the foundations for long-term peace and stability.
  • Empower local peacebuilding practitioners and community leaders, and we support their work through a network of international staff and consultants with expertise in a range of disciplines, including mediation and reconciliation, change management, community safety, and psychology.

We run programmes in the Middle East (Syria), North Africa (Libya), and the Black Sea region (Ukraine).

About the Role

  • In August 2017, PCi joined a consortium, as the technical peacebuilding lead, to implement a FCO-funded Syria Peace Process project (SPPP). The purpose of this project is to build the capacity of civil society actors to strengthen and address underlying causes of conflict in Syria, and to diversify civil society networking channels. It aims to create conditions for establishing peacebuilding infrastructure to take root in Syria.
  • We are seeking a Project Manager to lead the implementation of PCi’s component of the project, providing both technical peacebuilding input into activity delivery and project management. The Project Manager will drive PCi’s peacebuilding contribution to the project by developing guidance on activities, facilitating dialogue forums and trainings, developing learning modules, and providing advice on ongoing peacebuilding initiatives. At the same time s/he will have overall project and financial management responsibility and represent PCi within the SPPP Consortium Steering Committee and in meetings with relevant donors.

Person Specification

  • Educated to advanced degree level, preferably in social sciences with a focus on international relations, political science, conflict prevention, or similar, you will have at least 10 years of experience gained in a development-related field. With specific experience of working in fragile and conflict-affected contexts, you will be able to demonstrate that you have at least five years of conflict management/ peacebuilding.
  • You will be able to demonstrate that you have the strong presentation and facilitation skills needed to deliver training and manage workshops that build understanding of peacebuilding tools and mechanisms. In addition, you will be experienced in programme design and the development of successful programme proposals.
  • A successful project manager, with proven success in planning, implementation, financial reporting, and monitoring and evaluation, you are someone who establishes strong collaborative partnerships with project partners. You enjoy working with diverse teams and with mixed nationalities across multiple projects and programmes, while being able to manage staff (experience of remote management is highly desirable) and work effectively in a small team.
  • You will have excellent written and spoken English skills. Ideally, you will proficiency in Arabic, and you will be able to demonstrate a good knowledge of Syria and the region. We are seeking an inspirational leader who values capacity development, and who will model PCi’s core values of inclusion, dialogue and partnership.
