Job Description

Job Profile

  • work with the Asia regional director to develop a vision about the role and the future of the national foundations in Asia
  • serve as the principal liaison between the executive directors of the national foundations and the Asia regional director on all matters related to foundation programming, strategy, management, governance, board management, and budget
  • provide the Asia director with regular assessments of the political environment and the opportunities and challenges facing the national foundations in the region
  • maintain knowledge and understanding of the performance of the national foundations, including commitment to the Open Society mission and values; sound governance; effectiveness of their work; adherence to the approved strategy and budget; and a healthy organizational culture, including through regular trips to meet with the foundation staff and board members, locally based donors, grantees, and other relevant persons
  • ensure a smooth organizational transition for programs transforming into national foundations
  • ensure that operations in all national foundations are streamlined efficiently in compliance with legal and administrative requirements
  • establish and maintain regular communication with the executive directors and board chairs of national foundation in order to provide support, guidance and feedback on any changes in policies
  • assist the foundations in troubleshooting administrative, programmatic, strategic, management, personnel, and other problems
  • ensure the effective inclusion of national foundations in relevant Open Society–wide trainings and initiatives
  • facilitate the coordination and collaboration between the national foundations and other programs engaged in programming
  • serve as the primary contact for all central departments on issues related to national foundations
  • oversee security procedures related to the national foundations in the event of an emergency
  • work with the Asia director to define the overall strategic vision, guidance and leadership on matters relating to APRO programming, strategy, management, governance, and budget
  • assist the director to ensure a continuous learning environment, including through participatory retreats and trainings
  • assist the director in overseeing the production of communications and publications, including by writing and editing documents
  • assist the director to develop and apply learning, monitoring, and evaluation criteria to better measure the effectiveness and outcomes of work in Asia
  • as required, represent the director at meetings within the Open Society network and externally
  • supervise staff
  • develop and coordinate special projects as requested by the director
  • ensure a healthy and robust office environment to promote staff growth, wellbeing, and productivity using an appreciative inquiry approach
  • promote a healthy spirit of teamwork and communication within the team through regular meetings and exchange of information
  • integrate the organizational values into the performance of duties and tasks on a daily basis and participate in activities designed to uphold the values and foster healthy inter-office communication


  • proven commitment to the protection of human rights and knowledge of the Asia region
  • sensitivity for the local context and respect for the autonomy of national foundations
  • advanced degree and at least 10 years work experience
  • experience serving as a member of a board
  • five years’ experience as a manager with an understanding of the principles and practices involved in the effective management of a complex institution; must enjoy management
  • extraordinary initiative, creativity, and capacity to think strategically
  • ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a diverse array of people
  • team spirit and respectful working and decision-making style
  • ability to manage several simultaneous projects in a fast-paced environment
  • strong organizational skills and close attention to detail
  • integrity, diplomatic manner, and professional discretion essential
  • willingness to travel frequently
