Job Description

The Global Energy (CNGEN) unit, in collaboration with the regional industry groups, is responsible for IFC's energy business, including power generation, midstream energy infrastructure, and transmission and distribution. CNGEN is looking for a Research Analyst to support its global business needs. The Research Analyst will work with the group’s Industry Specialists and Investment Officers to conduct market analysis, data benchmarking, and write cutting edge reports on sector and geographic trends in the energy space. Strong research and writing skills are essential. The Analyst will have significant responsibilities managing knowledge dissemination in the energy sector across regional and project teams, including management of sector benchmarks, research of industry trends and organization of workshops and events to share market developments and IFC lessons of experience in the sector. Travel may be required for related work. The position provides an opportunity to hone sector experience in a specialized, growing and high impact area working closely with a group of senior IFC sector professionals.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Research and maintain a strong grasp of pivotal areas in the energy sector, for example:

  • trends in renewables;
  • gas-to-power economics;
  • competitive power market design;
  • market and regulatory aspects of emerging smart grid, distributed generation, and storage technologies; and
  • power distribution utility regulation;
  • Support technical and investment specialists in researching and writing cutting edge sector related reports which contribute to business development, execution and portfolio management;
  • Research, expand and update benchmarking database for major power sub-sectors in emerging markets;
  • Perform systematic mapping of countries and/or companies for potential IFC engagement in various energy sub-sectors;
  • Use database to help industry specialists and investment teams screen pipeline projects at an early stage to gauge feasibility in terms of project cost, utilization, tariff pricing and development impact;
  • Utilize IFC internal systems to generate pipeline, portfolio and other project related information;
  • Work on development and update of lessons learned database, technical handbooks, and other knowledge management materials

Selection Criteria

  • Bachelor’s or equivalent degree with specialization in economics, statistics, energy, or environmental studies; Masters is a plus;
  • Experience in a research-oriented role (2+ years) with a proven track record of publishing reports and analysis would be a plus, ideally in the energy sector;
  • Experience writing high level briefs on sector trends and ‘deep dive’ reports;
  • Sector experience in conventional power, renewable energy, and/or energy-focused technology is a plus;
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills; financial literacy – understanding of key balance sheet, cash flow and valuation ratios for power sector companies;
  • Able to work well in multicultural teams and across boundaries;
  • Demonstrated teamwork skills;
  • Strong client service orientation with an openness to feedback and new ideas;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Powerpoint; experience with statistical applications such as STATA is a plus;
  • Excellent presentation and writing skills;
  • Fluent in English; other languages a plus.
