Job Description

The “TB Innovations and Health Systems Strengthening” project is a 5-year USAID funded project that aims to strengthen national and regional level implementation of the National TB Strategic Plan by providing state-of-the-art capacity building and technical expertise to scale-up TB and DR-TB prevention, detection and treatment. The Activity will identify and help implement proven approaches to improve prevention, increase case detection rates, decrease default rates, and increase treatment success and cure rates across the continuum of care.

One of the major challenges in the implementation of the Programmatic Management of Drug-Resistant TB (PMDT) in the country is the poor treatment outcomes of patients with multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB). In the 2016 cohort, only 56% of enrolled patients with DR-TB were successfully treated with 31% lost to follow-up rate. The main reason for the high lost to follow-up rate is due to adverse drug reactions. To address this concern, one of the key strategies is to introduce a modified shorter treatment regimen (mSTR) that composed of all oral drugs which are newer, less toxic and more potent. The National TB Control Program (NTP) of the Department of Health, Philippines, in collaboration with development partners, will embark on the use of modified shorter treatment regimens for MDR TB under operational research conditions. The TB Innovations and Health Systems Strengthening Project (TB IHSS) is the technical lead for this initiative. Moreover, TB IHSS has several planned operational research related to TB in collaboration with NTP.
