Job Description

Job Summary:

The research intern will support the Chief Science Office by performing research assistant tasks and other professional duties. The research will include systematic searching and screening of academic articles, reading and coding information from articles, performing simple data analysis (ideally in Stata), creating tables and graphs, writing sections of papers, and preparing PowerPoint presentations. Research tasks will also include identifying and summarizing documents to support background analysis. The intern will occasionally communicate with researchers both inside of and outside of the company in person, by phone, and over email. Other professional duties include writing blog posts, formatting and revising CVs, creating and updating project trackers, printing and collating documents, assisting with logistics for events, searching public image files, and others. The intern may be asked to attend outside events and take notes or tweet. Candidates should have a Bachelor's or Master's degree (preferred) with an emphasis in quantitative social science analysis and should be familiar with experimental and quasi-experimental methods of impact evaluation. The internship will be from late June/July to the end of December.

Applied Knowledge & Skills:

  • Demonstrates advanced skills in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Ideally proficient in Stata.
  • Reviews data and information for completeness and accuracy using standard guidelines; performs tasks with attention to detail.
  • Uses basic office software programs, information systems, and office equipment to access, input, and verify standard information.
  • Communicates information clearly to staff, clients, and/or public about services, processes, and procedures using prescribed or established guidelines.
  • Gathers readily available information from office records to drafts e-mails, memos and other documents.
  • Proofreads documents for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and basic formatting.
  • Records and documents information accurately.

Problem Solving & Impact:

  • Works on problems of moderate scope that require analysis and evaluation of identifiable factors and interpretation of the situation.
  • Exercises judgment within defined and existing practices to determine specific work methods for obtaining results.
  • Decisions may affect a work unit or area within a department.

Supervision Given/Received:

  • Close supervision involving detailed instructions and frequent monitoring of work performance.
  • Contacts are primarily within immediate work unit.
  • Contacts involve obtaining or providing information requiring little explanation or interpretation
  • Contributes to business and departmental functions to achieve goals and acquire work experience.
  • Receives general instructions on assignments and work is reviewed for accuracy and completion.
  • Typically reports to a Manager.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or its International Equivalent in a social science or related field.
  • Master's Degree preferred.

Experience:

  • Research experience including data analysis and analytical writing.
  • Must have completed coursework or professional experience in impact evaluation methods and the application of impact evaluation evidence.
  • Articulate, professional and able to communicate in a clear, positive manner with outside research professionals and staff.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English.
