Job Description

Background

Outline India is a research firm focusing on data collection and geared towards evidence-based decision making. We are committed to strengthening the design of programs and interventions by conducting needs assessments, formative research, and monitoring and evaluation studies. Outline India focuses on catalyzing the work of academics, think tanks, corporate social responsibility arms, not for profits, funders and the Indian Government. In the last six years, we have worked on over 100 evaluations in 26 states and union territories, over 8000+ villages, representing 4.5 million stakeholders from diverse backgrounds, settings, and sectors, with the aim to include their needs, opinions, and views to draft and inform the work of our partners and policymakers in a better way. We have recently commenced operations in Nepal. Outline India has recently launched a tech platform and application - Track your Metrics (TYM) that hopes to automate social assessments. TYM has a massive and evolving survey bank, with surveys linked to indicators. We are looking for someone who is interested in working with a young and growing social enterprise and is keen on contributing to its growth within the development/social sector space.

Job Description

  • The Research Manager is expected to manage a team of 10-15 researchers, lead research projects and ensure quality deliverables. We are looking for someone who is interested in working with a growing social enterprise and is keen on contributing to its growth.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Research, Business Development, Communications and Outreach, and HR teams.
  • Work closely with the Founder in daily management development of strategic decision making for the company.
  • Mentor and guide researchers.
  • Manage and oversee research projects, especially in ensuring the high quality of all deliverables.
  • Develop robust mixed-method study designs.
  • Assign and follow-up on timely completion of all deliverables.
  • Work towards building IP products and services.
  • Develop skill and capacity building for all researchers and team members.
  • Handle/lead client meetings, presentations, and queries.
  • Attend conferences, talks, and workshops on behalf of the company.
  • Coordinate with the business development team and the founder on potential client and project strategy.

Qualifications

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Strong academic qualifications in Social Sciences – Minimum Master’s degree; Ph.D. and M.Phil. Degrees preferred.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in the Indian development sector.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to put together presentations and infographics.
  • Previous experience of undertaking fieldwork and field training.
  • Strong management and leadership skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and take responsibility for the timely completion of activities.
  • Previous experience of writing proposals for the social and development sector.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills.
  • Have a network to loop in experts, advisors, other consultants.
  • Expertise in either quantitative or qualitative research knowledge and experience. Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of both.

In the case of quantitative expertise, the candidate should possess the following experience:

  • Demonstrated experience of working on large scale surveys/projects, especially evaluations and RCT studies in India.
  • Experience of developing a sampling strategy for projects and proposals.
  • Demonstrated experience in using digital data collection platforms such as Survey CTO, M-water, etc.
  • Knowledge of quantitative software packages are mandatory (e.g. STATA, SPSS, R).
  • In the case of qualitative expertise, the candidate should possess the following experience:
  • Demonstrated experience of working on large scale qualitative research assignments.
  • Experience of conducting interviews and FGDs for fieldwork in India.
  • Knowledge of Ethnographic methods, PRA techniques, etc. for projects in India.
  • Experience in undertaking qualitative data analysis and report writing.

In the case of qualitative expertise, the candidate should possess the following experience:

  • Demonstrated experience of working on large scale qualitative research assignments.
  • Experience of conducting interviews and FGDs for fieldwork in India.
  • Knowledge of Ethnographic methods, PRA techniques, etc. for projects in India.
