Job Description

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is the world’s premier research organization dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger through rice science; improving the health and welfare of rice farmers and consumers; and protecting the rice-growing environment for future generations. IRRI is an independent, nonprofit, research and educational institute, founded in 1960 by the Ford and Rockefeller foundations with support from the Philippine government. The institute, headquartered in Los Baños, Philippines, has offices in 17 rice-growing countries in Asia and Africa, and over 1,000 staff.

Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.

Job Purpose:

The Rice Breeding Platform will deliver on key priorities of the Strategic Plan in the areas of breeding for favorable environments, breeding for unfavorable environments, host plant resistance, quantitative genetics, seed and delivery systems and germplasm evaluation.

The Native Trait Discovery and Deployment group is responsible for contributing to the identification, validation and deployment of valuable new genes and QTLs, making them available in high-quality elite genomic backgrounds. This position will perform and coordinate genotyping activities related to the QTL Deployment and Line Augmentation activities within the Native Trait Discovery and Deployment group. The incumbent will be expected to perform routine molecular tasks such as DNA extraction, PCR, KASP/PACE genotyping, sampling of plants for genotyping, coordinating shipment of samples for genotyping at service providers, gel electrophoresis, scoring and recording of genotyping data under general supervision of the Scientist, as well as maintain the laboratory in good operating condition. The incumbent will also assist with storage, retrieval and shipping of seed samples, and with the testing of new marker systems. The position will be primarily laboratory-based, with substantial components in the screenhouse/glasshouse and the possibility of occasional field work.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Execute laboratory and glasshouse operations, including PCR, DNA extraction for genotyping, KASP/PACE assays;
  • Record and curate genotyping results in appropriate databases;
  • Assist with the curation of plant records in B4R;
  • Maintain a safe and efficient working environment through reporting all incidents, near misses and suggesting possible solutions in order to improve operations and systems;
  • Facilitate the processing and documentation of the Seed and Non-seed material exchanges thru B4R.
  • Provide timely, consistent and accurate information to direct supervisor/requestor to ensure smooth flow of research activities (i.e. availability and purchase of supplies, reporting of equipment malfunction) and that research objectives and SOPs are followed;
  • Communicate selection decisions to glasshouse staff for action;
  • Support scholars, students, researchers and scientists in establishing glasshouse experiments and needed requirements for the Seed and Non-seed material exchanges.
  • Operate machinery and equipment to deliver service and experimental support as per request;
  • Assist team members in data collection, encoding, analysis and other pertinent documentation ensuring accuracy and quality outputs;
  • Prepare materials and lay-out and ensure proper maintenance of the experiment operations, as required by the institute and government protocols including maintenance of storage and preparation of supplies, property and material inventory, cleanliness, orderliness and safety, preparation of commonly used fertilizers and chemicals as well as waste disposal;
  • Contribute to the preparation of reports and manuscripts where appropriate;
  • Prepare documents as required by the institute and government protocols for the Seed and Non-seed material exchanges/transfers.

Qualifications: Bachelor of Science graduate in a relevant discipline with at least 2 years of relevant work experience

Skills Required:


  • Proficient in DNA and RNA extraction.
  • Proficient in PCR setup, running, scoring and data management for marker-assisted selection.
  • Significant familiarity with MS Office
  • Significant familiarity with developmental and molecular genetics and Mendelian genetics principles


  • Basic knowledge in rice breeding, postharvest and material transfer protocol
  • Experience performing automated data collection/entry
