Purpose of Position

The Senior Communication Advisor is a full-time position for an upcoming award in Malawi funded by USAID entitled PREVENTION TBD - Comprehensive Condom Programming (CCP). This position is contingent upon funding and donor approval.

The Senior Communication Advisor will provide technical leadership in the design and implementation of comprehensive, targeted health communication to increase use of male and female condoms.

Background

The PREVENTION TBD activity is a five-year USAID funded program with the goal of prevention new Human Immuno-Deficiency Virus (HIV) infections in target populations in PEPFAR priority districts in Malawi. Through the PREVENTION TBD, USAID plans to award up to four cooperative agreements to implement three related HIV prevention components: (1) Voluntary Male Medical Circumcision (VMMC); (2) DREAMS AGYW Services and HIV Case-Finding; and, (3) Comprehensive Condom Programming (CCP). The Comprehensive Condom Programming (CCP) project will focus on supporting the GoM to implement the national condom strategy, strengthening social marketing, improving public sector supply systems to increase access to condoms and lubricants, and increasing demand for condoms, especially among key populations.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop an overall strategy to increase condom use through both branded and generic communication campaigns, utilizing consumer and market research on barriers and facilitating factors to shape messaging on condom use;
  • Determine effective ways to measure the outcomes of the interventions;
  • Lead, plan, and implement the project's strategic communications and provide communication guidance to project leadership;
  • Develop and/or update materials used for demand creation;
  • Work closely with the Chief of Party to set communication priorities and direction;
  • Actively participate in national technical working groups and professional forums;
  • Coordinate, identify, and disseminate success stories and best practices from the project;
  • Represent project at national, regional, and global technical forums as required.

Requirements

Candidate Requirements

  • Master's degree or higher in public health, social and/or behaviour sciences or a related field, with a focus on community-level health communication, promotion and/or education.
  • A minimum 7 years' experience in the ESA region with progressively increasing responsibility in designing, implementing, and assessing large scale health communication programs.
  • Deep expertise in evidence-driven, theory-based, behavioural HIV prevention interventions.
  • Familiarity with innovative, interdisciplinary approaches such as human-centered design and behavioural economics for increasing demand for and use of health products and services.
  • Prior experience with building community competency to improve health, and participatory methodologies for engaging beneficiaries in planning and implementing local-level activities.
