About the Role
We are recruiting a Team Leader for the Technical Innovation team working on zero emission transport and infrastructure. The successful candidate will play a crucial role leading a small multi-disciplinary team, growing our activities delivering R&D and technical consultancy services. As well as leading and growing our team of technical and project experts, the candidate will manage a portfolio of consultancy and research projects in the space of zero-emission transport, energy systems and infrastructure, including electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell technologies. At Cenex, we lead by example, so you should expect approximately 20% of the role to be on team management activity and 80% on technical projects and delivery.
This role will be responsible principally for:-
Leading a small but growing team of technical experts, including managing, developing and coaching staff to enhance their performance and support their development
Planning and managing resources as the team input to a portfolio of R&D and consultancy projects
Project management of a portfolio of research and consultancy projects or work packages
Working collaboratively with colleagues to set the strategic direction of future research and use this to drive the business development pipeline
Acting as technical lead on proposal development for new work, engaging other members of the team where needed
Delivering technical advice to clients and partners through quantitative analysis, technical due diligence and cost-benefit analyses for technologies and use cases
Engaging with key stakeholders to further the mission of reducing the environmental impact of transport and to support government consultations and other consensus building activities
Leading and contributing written content and technical analysis for the preparation of reports
We are looking for highly motivated individuals with existing experience in energy and/or transport, or with excellent transferable technical experience who demonstrate a genuine interest and can apply critical thinking to a new subject area. You will need to possess the following attributes:

Strong people and leadership skills
Project working experience
Genuine interest in transport, energy and environmental technologies and policy.
Technically minded with good background knowledge of, and willingness to learn about energy, electrical, and mechanical systems.
Quick to learn and comfortable working across a range of different technology areas (such as hydrogen fuel cells and EV charging)
Ability to analyse and present technically challenging data clearly in verbal and written form
STEM degree
Strong IT skills – Microsoft Office (Excel in particular)
Excellent verbal and written English communication skills and report construction
Strong interpersonal and customer engagement skills
Ability to work and travel flexibly in the UK and on occasion abroad
Desirable Attributes
Experience leading a team
Experienced project and programme manager
Project management qualification
STEM degree at Masters level or higher
Strong knowledge of transport and/or energy sector, the standards and regulatory environment, and understanding of the impact of electric vehicles on the electricity network
Experience of managing research and/or consultancy projects
Previous experience in a R&D and/or consultancy role
Experience of industrial research within UK or European Union funded projects, ideally Innovate UK or Horizon 2020
Information collection, database and statistical analysis experience
International experience and/or able to work in a second language
