Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
  • The overall objective of the UNEP’s Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities.
  • The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is the strategic partnership between the United Nations and over 350 banks, insurers and investors. For over 29 years UNEP FI has been shaping and driving the international sustainable finance agenda, setting global standards and growing a global network of leading financial institutions. Through its work-streams and regional activities, peer learning, methodology development, training and research, UNEP FI carries out its mission to help the financial industry align with and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals and with that take on the crucial role it must play in achieving a sustainable future.
  • UNEP FI’s sustainable finance training services are part of UNEP FI’s effort to carry out the mission to "identify, promote, and realise the adoption of best environmental and sustainability practice at all levels of financial institution operations”. The primary aim of these services is to raise awareness and to build capacity in sustainable finance amongst UNEP FI Signatories and other financial institutions, as well as relevant stakeholders in governments, NGOs and Academia, especially in developing countries and emerging markets. In particular, UNEP FI requires a consultant to work on its activities in the Training Department and assist in developing new training products.

UNEP FI undertakes the following training:

  • Environmental and Social Risk Analysis (ESRA) Training Programme
  • The ESRA Training Programme seeks to train financial analysts on how to identify, analyse and manage environmental and social risks associated with their clients’ projects in order to integrate E&S risk management in their day to day lending and investment processes and decision-making.
  • Corporate Ecoefficiency in Financial Institutions (CEFI) Training Programme
  • The CEFI Online Course seeks to train representatives of the financial sector on how to make efficient use of the resources involved in the daily internal operations of financial institutions (FIs) and thus reduce their environmental footprint.
  • Climate Change & the TCFD: Risks & Opportunities for the Banking Industry Training Programme
  • The aim of the course is to prepare banking organizations as lenders carry out TCFD-responsive assessments & disclosures, and is based on the groundbreaking work of the UNEP FI pilot groups on TCFD adoption.
  • Green, Social & Sustainable Bonds Training Programme
  • UNEP FI along with various partners join forces to deliver Green, Social & Sustainable Bonds Training Workshops to promote the development of a greener and more inclusive growth in the countries where these have taken place. The workshops are aimed at potential green/social/sustainable bond investors, issuers and verifiers/second-party opinion providers.

Sustainable Finance Training Programme

  • The Sustainable Finance Training Programme seeks to train representatives of the financial sector to understand the linkage between Sustainability, business & finance
  • The topics include Environmental and Social Risk Analysis (ESRA), Green Products and Services Financing, and Corporate Eco-efficiency.
  • Sustainable Finance Training Programme for Saving & Credit Cooperatives
  • The Sustainable Finance Training Programme seeks to train representatives of saving & credit cooperatives to understand the linkage between Sustainability, business & finance
  • The topics include Environmental and Social Risk Analysis (ESRA), Green Products and Services Financing, and Corporate Eco-efficiency.
  • Responsible Investment Training Programme
  • The Responsible Investment Training Programme seeks to train institutional investors
  • on how to invest in a responsible way. The topics include Positive Impact, Capital Natural risk took, TCFD tool for institutional investors, etc.
  • Ecosystems & Sustainable Finance Training Programme
  • New Series of training webinars on the strategies and actions that financial institutions can take to accelerate the transition process towards a more sustainable economy, managing more adequately the current risks and barriers, especially considering those related to natural resources and identifying business opportunities through the innovation of financial products and services that they offer to their clients.
  • UNEP FI’s Training Programme is an integral part of the Initiative’s efforts to fulfill its mission to "identify, promote, and realise the adoption of best environmental and sustainability practice at all levels of financial institution operations". The Initiative needs a consultant to support UNEP FI’s Training Programme in promoting and delivering the online courses and in-person workshops on: Environmental and Social Risk Analysis (ESRA), Corporate Ecoefficiency in Financial Institutions (CEFI), Climate Change & the TCFD: Risks & Opportunities for the Banking Industry, Green/Social/Sustainable Bonds, Sustainable Finance, Responsible Investment, and Ecosystems & Sustainable Finance.
  • The ESRA Training Programme in Chinese was launched to the market in 2019 (as an in-person-workshop) and through a 3-week online course in 2020. A new hybrid model will be developed and launched in 2021.
  • The consultant will also assist in scaling up the existing training programme and develop new training programmes.

Specific tasks and responsibilities -

The incumbent will be responsible for the following:

  •  Assist in the delivery of the ESRA, CEFI and Climate Change Online Courses.
  •  Assist in organizing multiple series of training webinars on many topics related to Sustainable Finance.
  •  Assist in the development of case studies and relevant updates in the training materials.
  •  Use marketing tools to promote training courses and secure participants in the courses.
  •  Assist with administration and liaison with relevant and strategic UNEP FI Partners to scale up the Training Programme.
  •  Undertake research on sustainability training.
  •  Manage/maintain databases for the training department.

Deliverables/Outputs:

  •  Assist in the delivery of 10 ESRA Online Courses, 1 CEFI and 4 Climate Change Online Courses delivered in various languages from May to December 2021.
  •  Assist in the delivery of Training Workshops on “Integrating climate-related financial risks in Eastern Caribbean countries” from May to October 2021.
  •  Assist in the delivery of series of training webinars on Sustainable Finance for Savings and Credit cooperatives from May to June 2021.
  •  Assist in the delivery of series of training webinars on Ecosystems and Sustainable Finance from May to June 2021.
  •  Assist in the development on the new training programme on Sustainable Agriculture Financing.
  •  Assist in the development of a new hybrid model of ESRA online course (in Chinese).
  •  New networks built and regular contact kept with financial institutions, partner organizations and other Academic partners from different regions in order to promote UNEP FI training activities.
  •  Administration and liaison with relevant and strategic UNEP FI Partners to support to scale up the Training Programme.
  •  Research on sustainability training undertaken.

Qualifications/special skills

  • Skills: Proven knowledge in the fields of sustainable finance and the environment; knowledge of and experience in Training; ability to cope with and manage multiple projects and activities in an organised and timely manner; proven conceptual, analytical and evaluative skills; knowledge of and experience in administrative and research issues, strong organisational skills & attention to details, ability to work with extended and remote teams, and excellent communication (spoken and written) skills.
  • Academic Qualifications: Postgraduate degree in economics, finance, environmental studies, international relations, business administration, marketing or related fields.
  • Experience: At least 3 years of relevant experience in environmental project/programme development, project administration, sustainable development, training, or related field is required. Experience in sustainable finance is required. Work experience in marketing/promotion at an international level is required. Knowledge and work experience at the international level in particular with the UN system is an asset.
  • Language: English is the working language of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, Mandarin Chinese is required.
