Job Description

  • The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is the specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability. The mission of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), as described in the Lima Declaration adopted at the fifteenth session of the UNIDO General Conference in 2013, is to promote and accelerate inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) in Member States. The relevance of ISID as an integrated approach to all three pillars of sustainable development is recognized by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which will frame United Nations and country efforts towards sustainable development in the next fifteen years. UNIDO’s mandate is fully recognized in SDG-9, which calls to “Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation”. The relevance of ISID, however, applies in greater or lesser extent to all SDGs. Accordingly, the Organization’s programmatic focus is structured in four strategic priorities: Creating shared prosperity; Advancing economic competitiveness; Safeguarding the environment; and Strengthening knowledge and institutions.
  • Each of these programmatic fields of activity contains a number of individual programmes, which are implemented in a holistic manner to achieve effective outcomes and impacts through UNIDO’s four enabling functions: (i) technical cooperation; (ii) analytical and research functions and policy advisory services; (iii) normative functions and standards and quality-related activities; and (iv) convening and partnerships for knowledge transfer, networking and industrial cooperation. Such core functions are carried out in Departments/Offices in its Headquarters, Regional Offices and Hubs and Country Offices.
  • The Directorate of Digitalization, Technology and Agri-Business (DTA) coordinates and mainstreams the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) in its technical cooperation, strategic, normative activities aiming at fostering the inclusive and sustainable development in the era of 4IR. The Directorate creates new and innovative technical cooperation deliverables in the areas of trade, investment, technology innovation and agro-industry and agri-business. The Directorate comprises the Department of Digitalization, Technology and Innovation (DTI) and the Department of Agri-Business (AGR). Responding to the growing demand for supporting inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) in the era of the new industrial revolution, the Department of Digitalization, Technology and Innovation (DTA/DTI) leads the way in addressing opportunities, challenges and risks stemming from the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) and its contribution to sustainable socio-economic progress. The Department is responsible for the strategic coordination of 4IR-related matters with designated focal points in other technical Departments and organizational entities of UNIDO, as appropriate. In consultation with public and private partners, DTI designs and implements holistic interventions that are tailored to specific country needs.
  • The position is located in the Innovation & Digitalization Division (DTA/DTI/IDD) under the Department of Digitalization, Technology and Innovation (DTA/DTI). The division promotes digital transformation and innovation ecosystems building, to advance the economic competitiveness of developing countries by helping them to benefit from the rapid progress of digital and convergent technologies associated to the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and ensuring a smooth transition towards cyber-physical industrial systems and a smart society.


  • Tuna value chain development project (SAP ID: 200271)
  • UNIDO has been undertaking a series of projects since 2017 in order to promote the deeper integration of the fishery and ancillary industries in Chabahar into regional/global markets through building capacity of local institutions, upgrading enterprises in terms of quality, productivity recourse efficiency, etc., and enhancing market access. The Project for Promoting Inclusive and Sustainable Development of the Yellowfin Tuna Value Chain in Chabahar has been developed in line with the previous interventions and has been designed to leverage their impacts and outcomes for the purpose of advancing greater competitiveness of the fishery industry while ensuring the long-term sustainability of fishery resources. Through targeted interventions and a collaborative approach, this project therefore aims at improving the quality management system, promotion of exports, as well as creating a sustainable eco-system in order to support the inclusive and sustainable development of the yellowfin tuna value chain, as well as enhance regional economies through the development of the fisheries industry.
  • Promoting the livelihood and economic empowerment of vulnerable communities (SAP ID: 200224)
  • Sistan Baluchestan province, located in the southeast, is the largest province of the country boarding with Afghanistan and Pakistan, but the province is ranked the last relative to other Iranian provinces in terms of human development indices and characterized by high unemployment. Therefore, increasing income generation opportunities as well as employment for the vulnerable communities, particularly women and youth, is of utmost importance. In this context, UNIDO will undertake a project aiming to enhance selected handicraft value chains to promote livelihood and economic empowerment of vulnerable communities in the province through building capacity of individuals and local institutions, upgrading enterprises in terms of quality, productivity recourse efficiency etc. and enhancing market access.


Under the close supervision of the Project Manager, and working with the project team, applies basic theoretical knowledge and administrative skills in supporting and in acquiring a broad understanding of the interrelated administrative and programme/project functions contributing to technical cooperation activities in a particular sector, geographical area or programme/project by:

  •  Compiling general background information from readily available sources, on economic and social factors for an assigned sector, area, country or programme/project: designing and drafting supporting flow charts, schedules, graphs and tables; coordinating the collection and verification of documents, actions and data with substantive or support units assembling and editing basic data required for planning and negotiation, in format dictated by agenda or supervisor's instructions checking project documents for clarity, consistency and completeness;
  • Describing progress of ongoing project/s, investigating designated project activities, discussing findings with supervisor to identify implications for the work of the project unit, discussing rationale and context of project activities, considering the alternative methods for project design, management, problem identification and problem resolution;
  •  Maintaining institutional memories or other documentation systems to record project/programme, history and ongoing activities;
  •  Assisting in monitoring exercises related to the project implementation, retrieving substantive information on status of project, outcome, output, key performance indicators (KPIs), risks, etc. from the SAP Portfolio and Project Management (PPM) module;
  •  Drafting reports, ad-hoc assignments and research activities, as required;
  • Arranging briefings, tours, and related activities for visitors, missions and fellowship holders;

  • Advanced university degree in science, business administration, economics, other relevant discipline with a specialization in trade, project management, SME development.


  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Persian is required.
