About UNU-CENTRE (Office of Communications)

Located in Tokyo, the Office of Communications at UNU Centre in Tokyo implements and oversees UNU’s web presence, content development, visual identity, branding, and media relations in the University’s host country of Japan as well as globally.

Terms of Reference

The Communication Assistant's responsibilities include the following:

  • Manage UNU’s social media accounts. Draft strategies and campaigns to increase followership, engagement, and overall influence. Consider how UNU’s social presence could be expanded to additional platforms. Model social media best-practices for the broader UNU system.
  • Create content for various target audiences and platforms.
  • Find and actively engage with social media influencers to boost UNU’s reach.
  • Assist in the coordination of global social media campaigns and activities, working with communication focal points across five continents.
  • Propose and assist in the development of visual content elements for UNU’s social media and web platforms, including images, video clips etc.
  • Conduct environmental scanning and identify hooks to inject UNU research and expertise into timely events and conversations in media/social media.
  • Use media monitoring tools to consistently measure and report on the efficacy of UNU’s social media efforts, and to inform future social media strategy.
  • Update, edit, and schedule content for the UNU website.
  • Draft, edit, and proofread various materials in English and/or Japanese.
  • Compile/draft content for UNU’s monthly e-newsletter INSIGHTS.
  • Assist UNU Events including promotion, registration, invitations, and same-day support (including attending events when needed).
  • Support other OC work (including marketing, dissemination, content syndication, etc.) and perform other OC related duties as required.

  • Increase of engagement, followship and influence of UNU’s social media accounts
  • Increase of collaboration with influencers
  • Increase of global social media campaigns

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent 
  • At least 4+ years working in social media
  • Experience with social media monitoring tools
  • Experience managing social media accounts for non-profits, NGOs or other international or governmental agency
  • Demonstrated ability to create content for various platforms and audiences
  • Fluency in English and Japanese is required
