UNHCR re-opened its Office in Slovakia in 2022 at the request of the Government, in response to the Ukraine Crisis. UNHCR works in close coordination with State entities, including local and municipal authorities, UN agencies, and national partners. UNHCR's National Office in the Slovak Republic is located in Bratislava as part of the UNHCR Representation for Central Europe based in Budapest, Hungary. A Field Office has also opened in Kosice, east Slovakia. 

The Intern will be based in Bratislava, Slovakia working within the Inter-agency/Information Management Unit. UNHCR's workplace is dynamic, inclusive and diverse, with international and national staff, and offering opportunities which contribute to professional growth and development.

Under the overall supervision of the Inter-agency Coordination Officer, and working closely with the Associate Information Management Officer, the Intern will assist in leading the data collection, processing and analysis and information quality and consistency control about the protection needs of and the response to those forced to flee from their homes, including, but not only, refugees from Ukraine; generating empathy for and solidarity with people forced to flee, and particularly for refugees from Ukraine in Slovakia; building relationships with partners and other stakeholders to improve the protection environment across Slovakia.

The position:

As a member of the Inter-agency/Information Management Unit, the Intern will report directly to the Inter-agency Coordination Officer, will work closely with the Associate Information Management Officer and will have regular contacts within the office and with the Multi-County Office, assisting in the inter-agency and information management activities of the Office. 

Under the supervision of the manager, the Intern will provide support in broadening the Office’s engagement with partners and other stakeholders through collection, analysis and publication of refugee data and information management. To fulfil this role, the Intern may be required to perform duties also outside the office e.g. during workshops, meetings and other public events.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist in data collection, processing and analysis and perform information quality and consistency control;
  • Assist in data curation through manual or semi-manual/semi-automatic methods on processed, anonymized data received from multiple sources, with the scope of further analysis.
  • Assist in the design, preparation and management of technical tools such as online and offline dashboards, Kobo Toolbox, PPT, excel sheets etc. ;
  • Assist in the preparation of reports and project documents by providing information, preparing tables and graphs and supports the formatting;
  • Support the production of Information Management products such as summary statistics, maps, dashboards and infographics.
  • Support the organization of events and workshops and liaise with various counterparts 
  • on implementation.
  • Support the organization of UNHCR senior management, donor, inter-agency or media meetings and visits to the projects.
  • Assist in drafting and translating routine correspondence and texts.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years 
  • of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO; and
  • Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant 
  • An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.

Language requirements:

  • English advanced, required,
  • Slovak native level, required.
  • Knowledge of any other official UN language would be an asset.

Desirable qualifications and skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication as well as research and interpersonal skills in both English and Slovak;
  • Knowledge in computer programs, including MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher); 
  • Knowledge regarding quantitative statistical (social science/human mobility/population displacement) data analysis;
  • Knowledge with data analysis and visualization programs, (e.g. PowerBI, ArcMap, Stata, SPSS, Knowledge of R, Tableau, Adobe Illustrator and In-Design) will be considered an advantage; 
  • Webpage as well as database development and management skills an advantage;
  • Experience working with diverse people and cultural awareness;
  • Ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple tasks; 
  • Showing a genuine interest in learning and adapting;
  • Experience in data collection, analysis and information management, including presentations; 
  • Prior work experience, including as a volunteer, in terms of protection and human rights, especially with refugees and other vulnerable groups
